Spotify Confirms its Disco Ball App Icon Will be Retired This Week

Spotify has confirmed that its new disco ball app icon is only temporary and that the traditional logo will return sometime this week.
Recently, Spotify turned 20, and as part of the celebration, the company rolled out a flashy app icon modelled after a disco ball. Those who recently updated the app on iOS and Android saw the standard Spotify app logo replaced by the disco ball refresh. Many of whom didn’t take a strong liking to it. So, Spotify is reversing course.

In a response to Pop Crave, the company now admits that it understands “glitter is not for everyone.” The post then explains that the app logo refresh was temporary. “Your regularly scheduled Spotify icon returns next week.”
Spotify’s 20th anniversary was designed to be a celebration with its users. Subscribers can launch a new in-app experience called Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s), which lets you look back on key milestones in your Spotify usage. Within the app, you can get a glimpse at the very first song you listened to on Spotify, your favourite artists and how long you’ve spent listening. It’s a bit like the company’s annual Wrapped event, only spanning your entire tenure using the app.
It’s not known whether the rollout of the disco ball app icon was always meant to be temporary, or whether the backlash prompted Spotify to reverse its decision to use the new icon. Many users, myself included, have appreciated the company’s desire to move away from the minimalist design of the app icon and do something more distinctive.
In 2020, Instagram did something similar, rolling out a new app icon for its own celebration. Though much like Spotify, it was short-lived and was retired somewhat quickly.
