How to Disable Auto-Correction on the iPhone

by Gary on January 7th, 2008

The iPhone’s keyboard in combination with the touch screen makes for one awesome typing device. However, some people out there might be slightly annoyed when you’re trying to type a word that is not in the iPhone dictionary. That’s when the auto-correct feature kicks in and if you’re blazing away on the keyboard this can make things highly annoying as you need to correct the auto-correct (does that make sense?! haha). Anyways, do you hate the auto-correct feature? Want to disable it for your iPhone? Let’s get started!

How to Disable Auto-Correct on Your iPhone

1. Launch Installer (you should be familiar with this application by now) from your Springboard.

2. Go to “Install” and scroll down to “Tweaks 1.1.1″ under Categories.

3. Select Kb2 from the list of packages. Install it. Click the Home button, and the iPhone will go to the “Slide to Unlock” screen.

4. Go to Settings–>General–>Keyboard…you should see a new option, called “Enable Autocorrection”. Touch it to turn it “On”.

5. That’s it! The Auto-correction feature has no been disabled. You can type all your slang without worrying about the auto-correction kicking in!

6. Sit back, relax, and grab yourself a nice cold beverage for a job well done. =)

Not really an installer fan, i like cydia. Download Quickpwn it for mac and Pc, it puts both apps on your phone, make sure you back it up first with itunes, i used the pc one, pretty simple follow the instructions, i dont recoment changing the boot screen when it asks.
Springboard is the screen you see when nothing opened, its like the desktop on your computer, where all the icons are.

This os OK for v.1.1.4 but as there is yet no installer for v 2.0 there is no Kb2. So what to do then ?

This is not actually a fix, but it works just fine:
Type any letter, than move the cursor just to the left of that letter, so that when you type a word, there will always be this spare letter at the end.
This way, iPhone will not suggest words.
And when you're done, just erase the spare letter.
Only downside I noticed so far: Double-clicking "space" for "full stop - space" does not work. But I feel this to be less annoying.

For anyone that is wondering, I installed this on my 1.1.4 phone and it works beautifully.
  • It seems like auto-correct disable is of most interest to European, Russian, and Chinese iPhone users. Most visits to http://core3.com/wpblog/2008/01/31/turn-off-aut... come from these regions.

Thanks! That was way too easy.

I have just installed the kb2 application to turn off the dictionary and I am noticing that the double tapping shortcut is not working anymore. Even after uninstalling the kb2 application, the double spacing shortcut remains disabled... (even though the "." SHORTCUT setting is on)

I am an Apple iPhone user here in the Philippines. It works here now! I just love it. I just can't seem to find any other phone better than iPhone!!!
  • Etienne
    Does it work with 1.1.4?
    Thanks
  • Lam
    Does this work for 1.1.2?
  • Maybe things are better now... However, in the first couple of months after it's initial U.S. release, I was reading articles like these............

    http://www.tuaw.com/2007/01/10/apple-vps-confir...

I'm not sure what to make of it......
  • After installing this software (or other non-apple approved software), what happens when you download an IPhone software upgrade and get a message saying the download has detected 3rd party software? I'm all for digging into the device, but it seems that Apple may disable the iphone if the download detects non-Apple software installed. That's a bit risky for me cause I need my $400 phone to be functional 24x7.
  • So far, with all 3rd party apps, I have yet to see a message about 3rd party apps detected. Apple cannot disable your iPhone...I've never heard of that happening. Jailbreaking and installing 3rd party apps comes with a risk...it's the risk you have to take to experience the 100's of free apps out there! ;)

O man i'm loving the iPhone :) WOOOOT! hehe No its not fully unlocked :( :( :( Since its the 1.1.2OTB and well since the hardware mod (StealthSim and others...) are so expensive, I don't have the money after the holidays and I spent it all to get the iPhone lol but it was worth it. I've been trying out those tips u posted and will give u feedback in a bit. I also have made some wicked ringtones! There PIMP! haha they sound really good too, maybe we could make a tutorial up or something to help others ;) Well I have so much more to post about my iPhone but I will do that later haha I appreciate ur replys!
    Thanks iPhone Fan
  • Thanks for visiting Dusty. How is the new iPhone? Fully unlocked??
  • Dusty
