How to Make Unlimited Calls to Canada/USA with Skype on the iPhone for $3/Month

Share:

**Skype is now available in Canada! So just download Skype in Canada, then follow the steps below**

The past couple of days we’ve dedicated some decent coverage to Skype. At first, we document how the initial Skype for iPhone launch excluded Canada, then we wrote about how to download Skype in Canada by creating a free US iTunes account without a credit card. Lastly, I wrote yesterday about how to use Skype over the 3G network.

Today we’re going to talk about unleashing the true potential of Skype. How? Essentially it will involve three things:

1. A jailbroken iPhone with Skype installed to work over 3G.
2. A 6GB data plan, or minimum 500MB at the very least.
3. A $2.95US/month SkypeOut account or subscription.

How to Use Skype on the iPhone to Make Unlimited Calls to Canada/USA for $2.95/Month

The beauty of Skype is making crystal clear calls to your Skype friends over WiFi. Now that we can do this over 3G, it has opened up a brand new can of worms, so to speak. Skype has subscription plans where you can pay $2.95US/month to make UNLIMITED calls to landlines and cellphones in Canada and the USA.

By taking advantage of the newly minted Skype iPhone app, (now working over 3G–oh how sweet it is, eh?), and a generous data plan, you can start making cheap long distance calls anytime and anywhere without worry about getting gouged. Unless you are happy with paying 35 cents/minute for long distance calls within Canada (and even more to the USA), keep on reading.

1. Register a Skype account if you haven’t already.
2. Click here to order a subscription for unlimited calling to Canada/USA. It works out to roughly $3US/month. You can pay via credit card or PayPal. No contracts.
3. Login to your Skype account on your iPhone. Turn off WiFi, and start making calls to any of your contacts!

What am I using right now? I currently am using Skype Pay As You Go option as I call pretty much all over the place. But once my balance runs low I’m going to jump on the $2.95/month subscription to save on calling long distance within Canada. You can also add Mexico or unlimited worldwide calling for a few extra dollars more.

ishot-79

Even with the PAYG option, it only costs me TWO cents/minute to call Canada/USA! One minute on Rogers at 35 cents/minute is the equivalent of roughly 17 minutes on Skype! Now I know why these telcos see VoIP as a threat to their traditional business models.

Now that we have an official Skype app, it definitely makes it easier to call landlines and cellphones with Skype. The voice quality is very impressive on 3G. Gotta love the iPhone! ๐Ÿ™‚

Notes:
– Please ensure your data plan will allow you to chat sufficiently with Skype’s paid service. I am not responsible if you go over and are charged for it. You’ve been warned! ๐Ÿ˜‰
– I would assume that the 6GB plan would have enough data for frequent calling. We’ll soon find out when we get our next bill, won’t we? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Why turn off wifi? If I’m at home and connected to my wireless could I not use Skype? BTW – I have a 1st gen iPhone that is unlocked on 2.2.1.

Just FYI, Skype also charge 8 cents connection fee per call. So if you are making a short Long D call, it may not worth.

Has anyone looked at Truphone? It has Skype built in already and is available in Canada for iPhone and the touch. Check it out!

  • These may be silly questions but I’m going to Mexico in 2 weeks and I’m wondering if I can make skype calls over wifi using my north american skype plan.
    1) As long as I have data roaming off, I shouldn’t get dinged with extra charges?
    2) I have the unlimited North America skype plan (2.95). If I connect to wifi in Mexico, can I call a North American number, or do I need the Mexico plan. I assume the Mexico plan is to call numbers in Mexico which I won’t be.

    I guess I’ll find out.

Hi Josh, with a Skype account, you are able to use wifi to call anywhere your calling plan is subscribed to. I am currently living in Vietnam and I subscribe to the $2.95 Canada/US plan. As long as you have turned off data roaming and are using strictly wifi, your calls should be free from anywhere.

joshjadavies: I think that is the exact purpose of Skype. Correct me if I’m wrong, because I have no clue what Skype is about. I’ve dipped once into the Skype world once on my Mac for just a second and walked away. Who am I gonna Skype, seriously?

The skype to mobile/landline interests me. It definitely could take away my 5$ 1000 Canada wide minutes and save me a few bucks a month. I’d of course need to find a way for Skype to work away from Wifi. Isn’t there an App on Cydia that tricks your iPhone into thinking it’s on a Wifi? I never got the purpose of it until now, I’m curious to see if it will work.

I don’t have a wireless b/g router, I have an Airport Extreme on .n network, but when I change it to b/g it’s awful. It will only show half bars on my MacBook Pro. What up with that?!

About Truphone. While I was traveling last fall I used Truphone from Egypt, London and Paris through wifi. I brought an airport express, plugged it into the wired internet and could talk to my family and office in Canada on wifi. In fact, I had to call Rogers (with Truphone on the wifi on my iPhone) to get them to unlock my phone to call internationally when I was away from wifi as I had locked that feature a number of years ago. It works well. Skype is just a new option for Truphone, but it works well without it.

Could you try checking your current bandwidth used, making a call of, say,10 minutes, then checking again? I’m very, very interested in what kind of bandwidth skype uses.

  • Well, you don’t have to turn off WiFi, but when you’re out and about you won’t be needing WiFi to make the calls.

  • Ahh, thanks for that info about the 8 cents connection fee. Still a great deal afterwards though.

I suspect nobody has read through the pages and pages of small print in our contracts when we bought our iPhones, but I expect there is something in the T&C’s about not using VoIP? If thats the case then since Rogers can easily detect Skype traffic (uses certain ports, always connects to Skype servers etc) whats the chances they might bill us full price for all these calls?

Works great. Bought the 14$ credit for testing. Quality is great. The app is very nice also. The 9.99 plan sounds attractive if you travel a lot. Does this work with edge also?

  • It should work on EDGE, but I don’t know how the quality would be since EDGE is so darn slow.

I’ve had Fring since day 1 as well and my biggest gripe has always been the length of time it takes Fring to connect to Skype. – sometimes it took over a full minute!!!!
The new Skype app connects immediately!!!!
There is absolutely NO delay at all.
After installing and testing the new Skype app I have now deleted the Fring app.

We need to make this as mainstream as possible. It’s the only way Rogers will change their rates.

I have installed Skype using the instructions provided on this site and it works great, even over 3G! Now I can actually make long distance calls using my iPhone without having to shell out crazy sums of money to Rogers. Note: for Skype over 3G, you will need to use Cydia to install VoIPover3G as per the instructions.

Yep, this is better than Fring in a lot of ways. Making LD calls almost sacrifices no convenience, even over 3G. Fring took forever to load, and didn’t work half the time for me. There was also way more latency. With the skype app, I forget that I’m even using voip.

I have the 3G iphone and I donร‚โ€™t know how to make skype work on 3G.
We all have to use it, maybe this way we can change Rogers, to rip-off us less, and change their rates.
    thanks

DaSandMan: I don’t know if Rogers contract has any T&C re VoIP, but the US itunes store has a T&C stating you cannot use outside of US (if I interpreted it correctly). Wonder, do they actually care if we “purchase” a free app for use in Canada!?

bio: I downloaded skype from US app store at 3:09 am. Very easy!

Question, Does this also work with the Blackberry Storm. I've downloaded iskoot, and it works for skype to skype. But if I get the $3/month service, would I be able to take advantage of the plan too?

    Hi Si,

thanks for your reply to joshdavies about using your Skype US/Canada subscription on iPhone. That is extremely helpful to know. If the Skype subscription works on your iPhone then there should not be any problem with it working from my laptop…right? No data roaming to worry about.
