Rogers Releases New iPhone Data Value Packs

If you were an early adopter of the iPhone 3G in Canada then you paid the price with the original Rogers’ value and data packs. Well, it looks like Rogers has quietly introduced a couple new data value packs that apply to the iPhone 3G and any other cellphone.

Here are the details of the two new data value packs released on November 26th, and are unadvertised on the Rogers website (what’s new?):

$20 Value Pack
10,000 Text Messages
10,000 Multimedia Messages
Caller ID
Visual Voicemail
Who Called
Unlimited Blackberry Internet Service (BIS): Email/Instant Messaging Only

$30 Data Value Pack
10,000 Text Messages
10,000 Multimedia Messages
Caller ID
Visual Voicemail
Who Called
500MB of data: BIS, Windows Mobile, or iPhone

3 Year Agreement is required on both plans plus all data overage protection applies. 500MB of data is valued at $25, so the maximum data overage is $75. Some people who have called in have been able to get a $10 credit towards the $30 data value pack, as part of the hardware rebate program. So try your luck if you decide to call in.

These New Value Packs Can Save you Some Money

If you’re on the $30/6GB data plan, plus the $15 visual voicemail value pack, you can potentially save some money here. How? Well, if you’ve been using less than 500MB/month, you can opt for the $30 data value pack and save yourself $15/month ($180/year). You can easily switch over to these plans from your original value/data plans.

Also, I am surprised that Rogers has introduced 10,000 text messages into these data packs. I text often but I don’t know if I’d ever exceed or meet 10K texts in a month. I would have to send more than 333.33 text messages a day to hit 10K, LOL! Maybe it’s part of the Rogers plan to hook you in to spend a bit more on these value packs.

The big question some of you may be asking right now is: “Should I save $15 but lose 5.5GB of data?” Only you can answer that. If you’re a heavy user, obviously you are relishing at the thought of your 6GB data plan. However if you’ve been using under 500MB a month, this is the data value pack you’ve been waiting for. Personally, I will be sticking with my 6GB data plan because I periodically tether my data plan with PDAnet.

Either way, let me know in the comments if you’ve switched over to one of these new value packs!

Thanks Jasper and Daniel for the heads up on this!
