PwnageTool and QuickPwn 2.2.5 Download Available

The Dev Team has done it again. Yesterday they released updated versions of their PwnageTool and QuickPwn. Both have been updated to 2.2.5, to jailbreak the latest iPhone firmware 2.2.1.

QuickPwn 2.2.5 has been updated for both Mac and Windows.
PwnageTool 2.2.5 remains Mac only at the moment.

This time around, Apple tried to remove the yellowsn0w unlock with their 2.2.1 firmware update. So if you update your iPhone 3G directly within iTunes, your baseband will change since 2.2.1 firmware has a new baseband update.

Q: SO…what to do if you’re using an iPhone 3G and want to update to 2.2.1, but KEEP your iPhone unlocked?
A: You will have to update via a “custom firmware”, which PwnageTool 2.2.5 will do for you. Essentially you’ll create a 2.2.1 firmware file with the old 2.2 baseband (are you confused yet?).

Q: What about unlocked iPhone first gen users who want to update to 2.2.1? Will I lose my unlock?
A: No. Just update to 2.2.1 in iTunes, then use QuickPwn to jailbreak/unlock. The baseband has not changed.

Q: I’m using a late 2008 MacBook. What about my DFU problems?
A: Use a USB hub and it will work fine. That’s what I did for my update to 2.2 a while back.

Q: Is this 2.2.1 update worth it?
A: It’s up to you. It’s relatively minor, so unless you’re lazy and don’t want to tinker around (yet again), just hold off. There’s nothing new and you can save yourself some trouble. As for the rest of us…

Baseband 101 (from the Dev Team)

The ‘baseband’ is the generic name given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates.

When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 2.2.1 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband. This could be bad for certain people, depending on your ultimate aim.

Who here has updated to 2.2.1? I’m going to give it a shot, I will report back shortly. ;)

I used to have a jailbroken iPhone and then went back to the dark side. I am running 2.2 right now. I have decided to jailbreak it again!! Should I directly go to Pwnage tool 2.2.5 or do I have to jailbreak in 2.2 and then update to 2.2.1 by using Pwnage 2.2.5??
    Thanks! :)

Do you care about the 3G unlock? If you don’t, just update in iTunes, then use QuickPwn.

If you NEED the iPhone 3G unlock, go the PwnageTool route. Download 2.2.1 firmware, PwnageTool 2.2.5, and create a custom firmware. Do not need to JB twice!

    Fixing DFU mode on 10.5.6

As noted previously OS X 10.5.6 introduced a bug that affected the use of DFU mode. with some Macs. There have been previously published hacks and techniques to fix this, but here is another method that can be used to temporarily restore DFU functionality in order to use QuickPwn or PwnageTool.

You will need an account with ADC (Apple Developer Connection) this is free and takes a few minutes to sign up, you should read the terms and conditions carefully and you should only sign up if you are thinking of developing applications in the future – http://developer.apple.com/mac/
Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-315.4-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33” (yes, that is a “5” in 10.5.5 – this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension).
Unplug non-vital USB equipment, such as external DVD writers, USB scanners, USB mass storage devices, at the most leave a Keyboard and Mouse connected.
Install IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg from within the disk image
    Reboot your system!
Perform necessary DFU activity with QuickPwn or PwnageTool.
Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55”
Intall IOUSBFamily-327.4.0.pkg from within the disk image
    Reboot your system!
    Reattach your USB peripherals.

Can I use to quickpwn 2.2.5-2 and go straight from 1.1.4 to 2.2.1? I have an unlocked 1st gen phone and want to upgrade to the latest firmware. I’ve been on 1.1.4 for a while and feel like I’m missing out!!!

Be careful with this upgrade. In my case it hasn’t worked. Everything went smoothly on the computer screen as usual, but now my phone won’t boot :S and I have no idea how to restore it. It just displays the white apple and vibrates/flickers every once in a while. I hope I haven’t bricked my phone. Pretty disappointed.

    Any suggestions welcome.

You will need a Mac to use PwnageTool, or wait for WinPwn to come out.

I guess I will simply wait for WinPwn to have my 3G yellosn0w to maintain its unlock jailbroken state.

Holy Crap! Your iPhones are bricked? This is what you do: Turn off your iPhone. You can do this by holding the home button and power button at the same time and when it turns off just before it restarts, let go of everything, that way you turn off your iPhone. Next, hold down the home button (while your iPhone is off) and connect it to iTunes. Keep holding the home button. iTunes will detect your iPhone in recovery mode. Restore your iPhone. That’s it! Let me know how it goes.

I know this might be a stupid question, but do you have a PC or a MAC? Because if you have a Mac, then I would re-download again from the dev team website (get the official torrent) and try again because it worked for me fine. If you have a PC, then you downloaded the wrong file, you want the zip file which can also be downloaded from the dev team website. Please provide more info on whether you are using a mac or pc.

I’ve never heard of the problem before. I would unfortunately do a full restore (clean off everything from iPhone) and re-jailbreak. Sometimes, if you have too many apps and jailbreak you can screw up your iPhone. I always do a restore first before jailbreaking.
