Apple WWDC 2009 Roundup; iPhone 3G “S”!

Wow! What a show! Apple and their amazing products and marketing have done it again! Let’s summarize some of the things what we saw!


15-Inch MacBook Pro

  • Safari: HTTP streaming video and audio

  • Language support: More than 30 languages all supported in Landscape or Portrait keyboard layouts
  • Find My iPhone: Available to MobileMe customers. Shows iPhone on any web browser on a map through MobileMe. You can message your phone, alerting it. People can pick up the iPhone and call the number you specify. You can also send a remote wipe command.
  • In App Purchases: Renew magazine subscriptions or buy additional game packs (only available on paid apps).
  • Peer to Peer Support: Automatically find another player in close proximity and connect together (play games for example)
  • Push Notifications: With supported apps
  • TomTom Application: Turn by turn GPS navigation
  • Availability: June 17, 2009; Free for iPhone owners; $9.95 for iPod Touch owners


Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

  • Feature: 3D rendering and built in Expose for the Dock

  • Feature: Chinese Input Method using the Trackpad
  • Feature: New magnifier allows you to zoom into your thumbnails within the Finder
  • Feature: Play movies and scroll through PDF’s from the icon in Finder
  • Feature: Runs all major OS X apps running in 64-bit
  • Feature: Exchange support built into Mail, Address Book, and iCal
  • Price: Available on Intel based Macs for $129
  • Price: Available to current Leopard owners for upgrade price of $29

  • Feature: Crash resistance

QuickTime 10 (For Mac OS X 10.6)

  • Feature: Hardware acceleration
  • Feature: Color Sync
  • Feature: HTTP Streaming
  • Feature: Video editing from within Quicktime
  • Feature: Frameless video playback
  • User interface: Looks like the full video screen mode of iTunes




iPhone 3GS

  • Design: Same design as the iPhone 3G; Gloss back, same size
  • Screen: fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, meaning the screen does not attract finger prints as much
  • Speed: Launching messaging is 2.1x faster; other apps are faster by almost 3x
  • Network: Supports 7.2 Mbps HSDPA
  • Camera: 3MP camera with Autofocus
  • Camera: Includes autofocus, autoexposure. Tap to focus; allows focus and white balance changing on the fly.
  • Camera: Low light sensitivity improved
  • Camera: Includes video capture. A new switch says “Still” or “Movie”; 30 FPS VGA. Videos are stored along side pictures in the Photo app.
  • Camera: Trim video with tap of your finger from within the app.
  • Voice Control: Dial people in your contact list using your voice. Hold down home button and say the name of who you want to call. The various commands you can use float across the screen when the app is open. Also can control iPod playback and playlists by using Voice. For example, you can ask “whats playing now?”
  • Digital Compass: Shows orientation in Google Maps (so you actually know which way you are moving), longitude, latitude and link to Google Maps
  • Accessibility: Voiceover accessibility setting reads what you touch on the screen
  • Nike+: Built in support for Nike+
  • Hardware encryption: Instant data wipe and encryption in iTunes as well
  • Battery: 9 hours Wi-Fi (was 6), 10 hours video (was 7), 30 hours audio (was 24), 12 hours on 2G (was 10), 5 hours on 3G talk
  • Price: $199 for iPhone 3GS 16GB White or Black
  • Price: $299 for iPhone 3GS 32GB White or Black
  • Availability: iPhone 3GS available June 19, 2009.

  • Price: $99 for iPhone 3G 8GB Black
  • Availability: Only iPhone 3G 8GB Black is available; 16GB discontinued.
