Rogers No Longer Offers Monthly Price Plans, Contract Only

We have received unconfirmed reports that effective June 9, 2009, Rogers Wireless will no longer be offering monthly (non-contract) voice or data plans.

rogers_wireless

What this means is all of Rogers’ voice plans and data plans will only be available on 12, 24, or 36 month contract terms. Most of the promotional Rogers voice plans, data plans, or voice/data plan combos require a 36 month contract anyway, but there are a few voice only plans that are available on a month-to-month basis, requiring no contract. There are also numerous data plans available on a month-to-month basis requiring no contract. However, it would now seem that both voice plans and data plans will now require atleast a 12, 24, or 36 month contract term.

Like I said, this has not been confirmed, but if it turns out to be true it will be a real shame. Monthly non-contract plans are a great resource for people who simply need temporary cellular service, but we may be seeing the end of those days with Rogers. From now on though, it seems that if you need monthly non-contract service from Rogers, Pay as you Go is your only option which is less than great.

I will update this further as the situtation develops.

Thats crap, people already sign for multiple years
what if you are doing some travelling and change your plan to something smaller, you cant cancel your contract, and they wont let you have any other breaks. Its bad enouph that you had to sign for 3 year with the 6gb data plan.

If Rogers must do this, then offer 3-6 months for people who prove they will be out of country ect.
Really sounds like Rogers is not worried about the upcoming competetion. This is not the direction they should be going!

Actually, form a business perspective, lock up as many as you can before the new guys come on the street. That way, when the new cell phone carriers appear, everyone should be on a contract, probably with steep ETFs as well

Yup … they must be very afraid of what’s coming … they are in damage control mode. This means, better to avoid contract as much as we can.

Rogers just keeps shooting itself in the foot these days. With their overpriced data plans, and recent downgrading of features on all plans they’re going to start losing a ton of current and would be customers.

Wait, does this mean that even after paying out your entire contract, you can’t go month-to-month and have to re-up for another 3 years?

Or does this only apply to month-to-month plans on new cell phone?

At least with internet and cable, I can go month-to-month either after a contract is up, or if I pay more each month.

So what was the outcome here?

I'm looking at Rogers Voice + Data plans on their website (45 per month). Does this mean to use that plan I MUST sign a 3 year contract?

Unfortuntely yes.
Any voice and data packages are 3 year plans only.

Canadians should not allow phone companies to force us into contracts. We pay for these services monthly and ongoing, and if their products & service are good- why would we not keep using those services….? This contract thing is robbery, And cell phone bills dont warrent “contracts”. A bank loan, or a mortgage maybe… but Cell phones, cable tv and home phone services requiring contracts goes TOTALLY against my moral stance. I will not let them do this, and if enoughb of us stood our ground, we c9ouold make the change….. Look at the US. You can get unlimited, talk, test, and surf for $40 a month!!! Its time for canada to get with the program!!!!
