This week, a new email from Apple CEO Steve Jobs confirms that a software update will soon be released to address issues with the performance of iOS 4 on iPhone 3G.
In late July, Apple acknowledged that they were “looking into” user reports of the lags with iOS 4 on iPhone 3G.
The latest email from Jobs came in response to feedback sent by a customer who expressed frustration with the performance of iPhone 3G. The feedback specifically noted lags with scrolling, zooming, and typing.
The user email is seen below:
I’ve waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again. I’ve read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I’m not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple.

No hints were given as to when the update is coming, but the email response was likely referring to iOS 4.1 which is currently in testing periods with developers.

And i thought it was just me experiencing this slow problem… It takes minutes just to open the iPod app and a couple seconds to unlock the screen and answer calls (Lag delay). Hope the update comes soon! Still trying to replace my 3G with the 4 though.
I sure hope it’s soon. I’m was getting close to downgrading, but now, i think i can wait! I still keeping my fingers crossed
I gave up my 3G for the 4, and I feel for you guys that are stuck with the terribly slow 3G 🙁

I just downgraded last night to 3.1.3 since I can’t find an iPhone4 anywhere. It feels like I just went to a chiropractor… no more pain
Its about damn time. Since iOS4 my phone is barely usable.
4.1 should be released late this month early next if my calculations are right. And yes 4.1 dose address the 3G issues as well as makes others more snappy as well. Another little trick I have been doing for all my iPhones, and have noticed a small speed increase (more so on 3G) is disabling spot light search. Everyone I have done it for has noticed a difference.
iOS 3.X: settings > general > home > spotlight search
iOS 4.X: settings > general > spotlight search
Uncheck all options, restart your phone. You should notice a bit of a difference.

I have a 3GS running 4.0.2 and have noticed a few glitches since the last update. I did as you suggested and since I don’t need spotlight..no problem…and for whatever reason, the phone is faster in both Wi-Fi and 3G…excellent, but why is that?
I currently have the 4.1 update, if i download the 4.2 is it going to screw my phone up even more? its already going super slow since i updated to 4.1. does anyone know??
It’s 4.0.1 and 4.0.2. And no they are exactly the same, except 4.0.2

Soon is a relative term. I got a similar email from Steve Jobs about the proximity sensor a couple weeks ago.
I’m back at 3.1.3 as iOS 4 was slow in launching apps, and even my contact app is slow ie. tapping a specific contact in the list, it will take a good 5 sec before their name shows up.
Even with spotlight search off, still slow.
I did try overclocking and it helps a bit, but not as snappy as 3.1.3.
I’d like to know when they are going to fix the IPhone 4 Issues. Bluetooth is terrible and proximity sensor is still buggy even after latest update. My 3g and 3gs never gave me these problems.
Hey Ex/gary, i just had weird problem on my iphone 4. I got it 2 days ago. In my pocket it started vibrating. When i took it out i couldnt get the screen to turn on and the phone wouldnt even shut down. I had to do reset by pressing both the on/off botton and the home key. i have since then lost caller id. i m with virgin. any help or comments would greatly help. has anyone else had this problem?? should i take the phone to an apple store??? thx
With me tied into a 3 year contract with Rogers on my 3G, I have to face this problem everyday for at least another year or more :/ Hope Apple still cares about the 3G users out there
With the small improvement after 4.0.1, like the frog in the pot of water, I kind of got used to the lag even though it’s is SO frustrating. I didn’t realize how bad it was until I was showing someone with a 3G that hadn’t been updated for ages how to do a herd reboot. It took about 30 seconds. My updated 3G takes four to five minutes. It’s like trying to run windows7 on a 386 🙁
It is SO easy to downgrade I don’t know why anyone would be reluctant. The author of the email above is being silly. When a company won’t solve your problems, you need to take things into your own hands.

Waiting 10 seconds for an app to open is not acceptable and I am shocked that Apple would release something so bad. Didn’t anyone test it? And if they did, how could they have found it good enough for release?

I also traded in my 3G for a 4 and love every second of it, but have kept my 3G for a second line I have to run. Every time I use I am thankful Rogers let me upgrade even though I was only 1.5 years into my 3 year contract.
Me also. Before the iPhone 4 it was an agonizing few weeks with iOS 4 on my 2 year old 3G. I figured it would make the iPhone 4 seem like a supercomputer which it did. Apple should’ve not released iOS 4 for 3G it was terribly slow almost seeming untested. All people in line for the iPhone 4 did was cry about how unusable the 3G was since updating. Hang in there guys! I feel for ya Apple should’ve solved this problem already î–î„
The fix is already in place in 4.1 you just have to wait for public
release. I have personally use 4.1 right now, and yes the issue has
been addressed.
Does this surprise anyone? Apple just released the iPhone 4, they want sales. If they make the 3G even more craptastic some people may break down and upgrade. I don’t trust anyone at face value when money is involved so let’s see if Apple will come through with a fix soon enough before I hum this this into a nearby pond.

personally, i downgraded my firmware back to 3.X, was very easy, no need to jailbreak
