How To: Set Up iPhone Windows Live Hotmail With Exchange ActiveSync
As promised, today Microsoft delivered on Exchange ActiveSync for Hotmail.
ActiveSync for Hotmail allows Hotmail users to receive push e-mail for free on their mobile devices such as an iPhone.
With Exchange ActiveSync, there is no need to set your iPhone to fetch email every 15, 30, or 60 minutes. The message will come instantly.
How To Get Exchange ActiveSync Working With Hotmail On iPhone
To get Exchange ActiveSync working on your iDevice, follow along with the steps below:
1.) On your iDevice, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account.
2.) Tap on Microsoft Exchange.
3.) Input the following information:
- Email: Your Hotmail address (yo******@*****il.com)
- Domain: Leave it blank
- Username: Your Hotmail address (yo******@*****il.com)
- Password: Your Hotmail password
- Description: Hotmail
Tap on Next. Once the account is verified, a new “Server” field will appear. When it does, input the following:
- Server: m.hotmail.com
4.) Now enable push for either Mail, Contacts, or Calendar or all three.
Note that this has not been tested @live or @msn accounts, so if you have these accounts, try it out and report back!
Update: Users have confirmed that the above settings work with @live, @msn, and domains.live.com.
Enjoy!

Finally !!
It works for me 🙂
I’ll ask my girlfriend to try to configure her @msn adress and get back to you if it works or not.
I have a live.ca address and it works fine now… It wasn’t this morning..
Works for me on an msn.com account 🙂
works for my live.ca account – Thanks!
Wow, I didn’t care about Hotmail, but then I remembered my Sympatico accounts use Hotmail’s servers. I just tested it and it works! Cool.
Now, with several push-enabled mail accounts (work, Gmail, and now Bell), I keep push turned off. But having access to my Bell mail through an Active Sync account mean I can get my mail at work now. Bell POP is not allowed through our firewall, but ActiveSync is.
No
That’s a different process
Should have been clearer – I keep push turned off since it drives my 3GS battery dead within about 12 hours. But fetch works just fine with ActiveSync accounts too.
Works with Windows’ custom live domain as well.
It works with Live 😀
Very nice! And VERY FAST… wow
did a test… From Gmail to Hotmail, mail was sent and pushed to my iPhone in about 2 secs after I clicked sent. The text message notification arrived 5 secs later lol (no idea why I still have text notifications still on)
You guys are great! Wouldn’t have known otherwise that this feature had been brought to hotmail/live accounts. It’s one of the big features that others like gmail/yahoo had that MS didn’t.
Thanks Ex!
omg its AWSOME!…FINALLY i have my folders lol 😛
Awesome tutorial.
But in all honesty, I cannot fathom going back to Hotmail from my Gmail account. But I know a lot of people out there have had old hotmail names for the longest time.
I’m getting an error with my MSN account:
“Cannot Get Mail
Server error.
Contact your server administrator”
and
“Cannot Get Mail
The connection to the server failed.”
Any advice?
Thanks very much for the tutorial, this is why I visit this site. Keep up the good work!
You were able to get your sympatico account to work with the above setup?
I have had the same hotmail account since high school which is 15 years and I finally have all my folders!!! The tutorial was excillent and works perfect. I did a test from work this moring and it was about 4 or 5 seconds after sending the email I received it on my iPhone. Wicked!
Worked last night, now not working this morning. Anyone else having server problems
Same server issues today and last night, also keeps asking for password.
Has anyone tried this on the iPad? I did last night, and it worked. But as soon as your change the days to sync (default is 3, I wanted a month) it clears all email and you have nothing. Left it to “download” and still nothing.
However, if you leave it at the initial “3 days” setting, it works fine.
Maybe an opening day glitch…anyone else?
Worked on my iPad with 2 Weeks sync.
Would you be able to try to change it to a month and see if it works? Maybe I have something set up wrong 🙁
What about IMAP?
make sure to include the @hotmail.com for both username and email, kept asking for the password and couldnt connect to server.. i was like what am i doing wrong!
How about hotmail.ca accounts?
Works on live…do everything the same and use the m.hotmail.com server
This also work’s for email accounts set up through domains.live.com so I’m going to assume anything set up through the Microsoft email services will work.
is the host name still pop3.live.com and outgoing mail SMTP smtp.live.com ? Can some one check this for me ?
This also works for email accounts set up with domains.live.com so I assume it will work for any email account that uses Microsoft’s servers.
Set this up via a Window Live Help tutorial that was posted before this post was up. http://windowslivehelp.com/solution.aspx?solutionid=46bd910c-ed99-497d-80d7-ab8b11237ed0
Works like a charm. I was using mBox for my Hotmail which was great, but this allows me to sync my 2 calendars now. My only downfall was having to install iOS 4.0.2 and not having and SHSH blobs on file for 4.0.1 means that I’ve lost my Jailbreak. Oh well…no biggie!
This is great! My live.ca account went wacky 3 days ago and I couldn’t send any emails, it kept saying that the email address was invalid. I even called apple and they couldn’t figure it out. This is working great so far, it’s good for me cause I’m not a techie.
I can’t get any of my older mail, it only sends mail I have received today (the day I set it up). Any suggestions?
Can’t het it to work for Hotmail.ca my patience is wearing out! Anybody have any success with ca?
I set up my account with m.hotmail.com for the Server and it works well. This is a very nice change that has made me very happy!
It sure doesn’t work with hotmail.ca accounts. Maybe someone should put some R&D towards figuring that out.
This is great!! I have been trying to get my hotmail account to work with my iphone for months and have had no luck. But this worked perfectly! Thank you!!
This was incredibly helpful. I read a lot of complicated info on the web but this was clear and easy, Â and it worked right away. Thank you.

You’re welcome!
I’ve tried this on Iphone 4 and it did not work for me. I have an @msn.com account. You said to post if it did not work

You rock, this was the only thing I hadn’t tried out of all the other suggestions, and it works now, you’ve made my day, thank you.
