Apple Confirms Game Center Compatibility, Resets Stats Before Public Launch

This week, Apple has confirmed via its Game Center online page that the new social gaming service (think Xbox Live for iDevices) will be compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, fourth generation iPod touch, third generation iPod touch, and second generation iPod touch.

Missing from the list of compatible devices is the iPhone 3G.

Device Support

The lack of iPhone 3G support is interesting since initially the iPhone 3G could support Game Center during the earlier iOS 4.1 beta builds. As the beta came to a close, Apple removed Game Center support for the iPhone 3G and second generation iPod touch.

Now with the public launch of Game Center this week, second generation iPod touch support has been restored but iPhone 3G support was not.

So, as long as you have a supported device and each of the supported devices has iOS 4.1 installed, that device can make use of Game Center.

Stats Reset

Also this week, TiPb has noted that Apple has started to reset Game Center statistics in advance of the public launch of the service and iOS 4.1. Users testing Game Center have noted that their accounts have been deleted and friends removed.

With iOS 4.1/Game Center launching this week, Apple has made the playing field even by resetting all accounts.
