AirPrint has not been pulled. Don’t believe everything you read.
A new report today indicates that Apple may have canceled support for AirPrint (printing from iOS devices) to shared printers attached to Mac or Windows computers. AirPrint was one of the major anticipated features of iOS 4.2, especially for iPad users.
We have been told from a few Mac developers that a few days ago Apple removed all the references to printing via OS X 10.6.5 and PCs both from Readme files and other online documentation posted in the iOS developer center. It seems like all that’s now mentioned in the release notes are the aforementioned HP networked printers, as if the shared printing option never existed.
Users who contact Apple technical support about the removal of AirPrint are essentially told that Apple has canceled AirPrint support through shared printers. What remains to be seen is if there are plans to reintroduce the feature at a later date.
“Support for AirPrint on Windows and Mac has been cancelled. We will be in contact with you if another opportunity arises in the future.”
Some users running the GM seed of iOS 4.2 with OS X 10.6.5 seem to have AirPrint working, but the success is mixed at best. At this time, it seems that claims of instabilities and incompatibilities have forced Apple to remove AirPrint functionality.
