Welcome to iPhoneinCanada.ca V4!

Good morning! You might have noticed things look a little different here at iPhoneinCanada.ca. That’s because we just got an ‘extreme makeover’ courtesy of Joshua Denney from ThinkWebStrategy and Michael Martin from PliablePress.com.

The new theme is built on the PliablePress framework, which adds a lot more functionality to the theme’s backend compared to before. You’ll find some better navigational menus to help you find the iPhone content you are looking for. The colours and design have changed a bit, and it is going to get even better. I’m super excited with the new site refresh. We’re still adjusting so you might see some changes coming still. Look forward to some more goodies to come in the near future.

HAHA yeah it IS ad-filled. plus – it doesn’t appear to be working well. it looks kinda bad actually…

the drop-downs on carrier, news, reviews etc don’t work well – the design is bad – there appears to be no indication that they are more than anything other than text on the page…
for anyone NEW coming to this page – it would appear almost unusable…
aside – the other tabs at the top – the android and ipad tabs appear invisible unless you hover the mouse over them…

Dont hate !!! actually its pretty nice better than the one before , but the background needs something colorful , white is not good .
btw ” Haters only hate the things that they can’t get and the people they can’t be.”

Thanks for the feedback, but I don’t think the ad situation changed much from before 😉

Which browser/OS are you using where the drop downs don’t work so well?

We’ll be looking at site usage and will be adjusting from there, taking into consideration any constructive criticism recieved in the meantime.

If it helps Awood, it may just seem like there are more ads on this page than any other. The big PliablePress square one at the end of the post was just Gary being awesome and giving a shoutout to my company! (Thanks Gary! 😀 ) It’s not normally there though.

Also, the featured squares at the top are a little unfortunate at the minute. The shield one may look like an ad, but they’re all posts on this site being highlighted to you.

So like Joshua said, there hasn’t been a major change in the number of ads over the previous design. Hope you still enjoy the site! 🙂

I don’t mind the new look at all. Its how I found my Otter case for my iPhone4 which I bought at Best Buy in Vancouver back in August.

There really aren’t more ads on this page.
The problem is the color scheme. You’ve got the page as white and grey, and the font is greyish too. In contrast, the ads are all bright and colorful, and they pop out a LOT. So it just feels like there’s more ads.
I do think you should add some bolder colors to the page design. With these soft colours, the ads takeover the page. You can be simple and elegant without making everything white 🙂
Also, I have to admit I hate the font. Really makes it harder to read. It’s not the best looking font, and like i mentioned, it’s greyed and therefore harder to read.
Either way, I appreciate the effort guys. I love this website. A makeover was a good idea, and with a few tweaks it can look awesome!

Awesome, I knew something was up when I got a “closed for matinance” screen when o tried to come here on my iPhone. So far seems to look pretty good, I look forward to seeing additional changes in the near future, perhaps a tweaked mobile version. Mobile version use to be able to past to twitter and Facebook as well, but it seems to be lost for a while now.

You’re right about the fonts. I’ve been trying to convince Gary for while to switch to Helvetica and increase the size.

I think there would be less complaints about the ads, if the content was more readable.

Justin Luey

It’s actually not that simple. Sites like this need the ad revenue to survive, so blocking ads hurts good content. At the same time I understand the readers frustration when ads take away from the experience.

I actually think the ad implementation on this new design is a slight improvement, and the designers have posted that they are willing to tweak it based on feedback.

So keep the constructive criticism coming, and I’m sure they’ll get it right.

You’re right about the featured section, it has always been an issue. The posts are old and do look like ads.

Still too many ads. There’s a balance between making money and having a trashy looking site – now instead of a full side bar, they’re at the top (and that’s even with my ad blocker running…).

The lack of color in the new design makes it harder to read. Adding some color and contrast to set the different sections apart would really help. Right now it’s almost a blur between ads and articles and buttons and postings and…

Good feedback here, though I’d like to point out one thing:

My non-site for Think Web Strategy doesn’t have anything to do with the code here. Michael of http://problogdesign.com coded iPhoneinCanada and he’s certainly not lazy!

Joshua

Don’t worry, it’s just a starting point. What do you mean about the white background? Which background and what are you saying to change it to?

Joshua

Those are actually 3 of 4 featured posts that have been on the site for a while, though I see how you’d think they’re ads. There needs to be adjustments made for sure.

I know the difference between featured posts and ads. The ads, like InvisibleShield, Win a Free iPad (SCAMMMMM) were all at the top. Course, now they’re all blocked, hahahahhahaaaa!!!!!

Well said lilsaint. People who hate are just unleashing anger and frustration that others have done towards them throughout their lives. The oppressed become the oppressors.

I think the font used for the actual posts need to be darker and bigger. It’s not only hard to read, but it gets lost in the design. As a result, the ads stick out.
