the download is going EXTREMELY SLOW….lol….I know…shocking news!
Took about 5 mins on a 5MB fiber connection to get the file. Not too shabby. Not planning on installing it yet because of my J/B.
ok so I installed 4.2 no problem, took about 15 minutes to download and install on my 3GS. But…. surprise surprise, when i go to check out the new SMS tones…. nothing new appears?!?!? Anyone else??

I have two questions for the group…
1. If I have installed the iOS 4.2 GM on my iPad, do I need to restore it to get the new version of iOS 4.2? I ask because it when I plug it in, iTunes says that the software is up to date.
2. When I plug in my Apple TV 2, there is no check for up date area in the Version box… only Restore.

Perfect, everything works extremely well! Even Full Field test mode is back! Still get rid of premanent toggle of field test mode though. and for those who asked, yes you can install it from a different computer than the one you usually sync with. I’ve done it from work. Just set itunes so it doesn’t sync anything and Voilà !
EDIT: still can’t get rid of permanent toggle of field test mode.
Sucks, really. Shows updated software available for Ipod OS4 downloads it, puts unit in recovery mode, extracts software and won’t update the unit. Gets errors and has never been jailbroken. It’s a brand new iPod.
The update is the same as the 4.2.1 GM.
Staying away from this update until there’s a jailbreak for it. Anybody try this on a 3G iPhone? I’d be interested in hearing if it helps or makes things worse than 4.1 did. I’ve got over 100 iPhone 3G’s in my system and I’d really like some feedback.

Be patient. The Apple servers are getting slammed right now. You’ll be able to see the update soon. if that’s the problem you’re having.
I got 17 new text tones…. I’m now using Telegraph!
I really like the toggle to disable the ringer volume with the side buttons…
You’ll need to go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings. It’s the only way I managed to get it off.
I’ve downloaded the update but do I still need an internet connection to install on the phone?
I only have tethering available and with some updates the phone has become stuck in recovery mode until I am able to get to an available internet which is usually my wifes office.
So the about screen says my music is there but the iPod sees nothing as if my phone is empty. I’m so pissed off and won’t have time to fix it before work. Glad I have Zumocast to save my life. How is a bug like this here when it’s been tested for how long. FAIL
I have heard that this update will get the 3G back to working like it was before 4.0. So far, too early to tell. I hope so.

I recently upgraded my laptop and found out that there is no way to continue to use my iphone with itunes without ERASING EVERYTHING and hand picking my 2000+ songs and dragging them over. I’ve also had a serious error with my ipod dock in my car since 4.1, and since apple wont allow downgrades of software i’ve been forced to live with it for months now. Honestly, apples DRM madness and crazy software rules are driving me towards android….
Just downloaded and updated my 3GS, no problems at all. I was updated and running in about 20 mins!!! Great!
Zumocast lets you stream over 3G network from your puter. As I’m anti DRM I won’t run into that situation you’re in which I’ve heard of before. Good luck! So people know once u re-sync it will rebuild your library when u launch the iPod app. Sadly I’ve read of other people who had the same problem (updating before going out). There should be an options in settings to rebuild your library, but as usual apple treats their customers like idiots
New text tones are such a disappointment. They r too long and annoying. If I’m texting back and forth these tones r gonna make me wanna throw my phone.
Install on my 3G went well, but same as you, no new tones
This update completely messed up the folders on my 3GS. I now have 6 pages of apps instead of 2. Oh and now, whenever I answer a call with my bluetooth headset, the phone freezes for 10 seconds.

I’ve had the exact same problem with my iPhone4. Updated to 4.2 and now the phone says it’s all there, but the iPod app on the iPhone 4 says it’s empty. Glad I’m not the only one but what’s the fix?
Re-sync to your puter. Then launch app on the phone and it rebuild the library. Of course there should be an option in iPod settings to rebuild but nope apple thinks all their customers are un-tech savvy idiots
I updated my G3s to 4.2 and now have to switch from using my MAC to my old PC to access iTunes. Don’t update if you’re a devoted MAC user. Both my computers are the same vintage, and now my MAC is obsolete to use iTunes and my iPhone…certainly ironic considers Apples big ‘I’m a MAC’ campaign…now only thing backwards compatible is my XP! Check out all the problems with 4.2 for G3s on the iPhone disucssion board.
If anyone has instructions on how to get rid of the 4.2 and reverse the firmware I’d be thankful, and no I did not jailbreak my phone..
