iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.6b4 Download Available

Update 1: Download links updated with mirrors and misc. notes.

Yesterday the iPhone Dev Team sent an update about “Thanksgiving with Apple”. Well, in less than 24 hours they have released a jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 for OS X and Windows. From what the iPhone Dev Team wrote on their blog, the following will apply:

  • iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G: untethered jailbreak
  • More recent devices (iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 4G): tethered jailbreak (meaning if your device reboots, you’ll have to re-jailbreak)

Here’s the update released on their blog:

Update #1: redsn0w version 0.9.6b4 is now available for your 4.2.1 jailbreaking pleasure.  Please read all the above to understand what this jailbreak currently entails.

    • PLEASE UPGRADE TO iTunes 10.1 FOR BEST RESULTS
    • WINDOWS 7 USERS SHOULD RUN redsn0w IN “XP COMPATIBILITY” MODE

    Mirrors –

    Mac

    Windows

Currently their servers are being hammered so downloads are really slow. Your best bet is to wait and see how this latest tool works before attempting it on your own. Well done to the entire iPhone Dev Team! Their hard work is truly amazing.

Aaagh, never had to deal with a tethered jailbreak…and I don’t want to…

I guess I have to wait to get my untethered jailbreak =(

There is a way to check via your computer but to keep it simple… If you bought a 3GS from around Nov 2009 and on then you have the new bootrom.

I had already jailbroken and installed the patched version of Cydia on my iPad a few days ago. I was able to re-jailbreak using the new Redsnow with no issues (didn’t have to restore). Tethered boot on the iPad isn’t too bad, but I would never have it for my iPhone (plus 4.1 is pretty good for the iPhone, 4.2 was a big jump for the iPad).

The link for Windows gives an 404 Not Found error page…actually just for the hell of it I clicked on OS X an it gives the same error page. Is someone aware of this Gary? Thanks!

“New Apple TV can stream rented content from iTunes and video from computers or iOS devices via AirPlay.” I’m still dirty on the fact that Apple isn’t adding the AirPlay streaming features to the old Apple TVs. I refuse to believe it’s due to any kind of hardware or software limitation.

Any reason to update my 2G from 3.1.2 to 4.2.1? It’s not listed in the post, is it even doable?
