Dev Team: iPhone 3G/3GS On iOS 4.2.1 Unlock To Be Released By Sunday

A quick note for those keeping track, the iPhone Dev-Team has made very good progress lately on the iOS 4.2.1 unlock and according to MuscleNerd, an unlocking tool should be available by Sunday.

At this time, the unlock will only support iPhone 3G/3GS. The iPhone 4 unlock will require a bit more time.

From MuscleNerd:

Good progress today…everything is on track for updated ultrasn0w by Sunday/Funday at the latest (longer for iPhone4!)

Also keep in mind that to jailbreak your iOS 4.2.1 device will require a tethered jailbreak (reboot the iDevice and you have to use a computer to boot-up), so if you want the most optimal experience with your device, wait for a non-tethered jailbreak, then unlock the device.

I thought there was an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 3G/3Gs already? Did I get that wrong? The unlock for the 3Gs/3G will make my kids very happy!!

Because 4.1 wasn’t around long enough to be worth the time doing the unlock for from what I understand. The Dev team wanted to wait and concentrate all their efforts on unlocking 4.2 because it’s a major OS update, unlike 4.1 which was more of a patch.

Definitely need an untethered JB before I’ll do this. I have enough sync issues with my car stereo that I have to tetherboot it once every week or two.

But I found out from source that unlock for 4.1 would be released just after the launch of 4.2.

AND for your kind information, here the information from comment section of DEV team blog

iPhone 3GS
=========
*Unlock for baseband 05.14 will come Sunday (05.14 is 3GS iOS 4.1 baseband, 4.2.1 has another baseband and no ETA for unlock on that exists so STAY ON 4.1)
*If you DONT need an unlock, you can update to 4.2.1 and Jailbreak your device.
*4.2.1 Jailbreak is Tethered for newer models and untethered for older models.

Now suddenly unlock for 4.2.1 doesn’t sounds good

Has anybody besides me noticed that the battery life isn’t as good since downloading the 4.2 software? Or am I just crazy?

The iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS only have allow/ do untethered jailbreaks so u don’t have to worry about it being a “tethered jailbreak”

They had the unlock for 4.1 but with the announcement of 4.2. on the horizon they decided to hold off releasing it in order to prevent Apple from patching the exploit with the release of 4.2. Since 4.1 wasn’t a major upgrade compared to 4.2 it made more sense to kill 2 upgrades with one exploit and buy more time until the next Apple release. Now it looks like Apple will release an upgrade in December …already!
