Apple TV2 Tops 1 Million Sales, Over the Holidays

The Digital Daily is reporting today, that Apple has sold over 1,000,000 units of it’s latest version of Apple TV. This comes after Apple announced, last week, that they were expecting this would happen.

This new, little black box from Apple is really taking off, despite it’s limitations. It only supports streaming of iTunes compatible formats (which means no .AVI), and it will not stream full 1080p video. I think the thing that has really made this take off, is the AirPlay feature, allowing you to stream right from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

With the Apple TV running iOS, we also have a jailbreak for Apple TV, allowing 3rd part applications like PLEX, to be installed. This will allow streaming of other video formats, from your Mac or PC.

If only there was a jailbreak with actual apps.

My wife bought me one for Xmas. Airplay is fantastic but I do wish it would play .avi files.

All you have to do is use Vuze to convert .avi to Apple TV format. All you have to do is drag and drop it..it’s that easy. It even automatically copies the file to your iTunes folder so that it is available in iTunes automatically.
Realplayer converter works too and it’s also just a drag and drop.

I don’t really want to convert files. Right now I am downloading files and streaming them using my Xbox. Having to convert them is another step that I don’t feel I need to do. If Netflix had the latest DVDs on their site, I would definitely pay the monthly fee and use the Apple TV to watch but their selection is sorely lacking so for now I will continue to use my Xbox for movies and TV shows and use the Apple TV to look at Youtube videos and Airplay.
