New Device Case Turns iPhone Into ECG Monitor
The iPhone has hundreds of thousands of apps that teach, entertain, and amuse. This week, LifetoneTechnology is demonstrating iPhonECG, a system that turns your iPhone 4 into a Electrocardiography monitor (ECG).
Before even continuing on, there’s something profound about being able to use your iPhone 4, basically a cell phone, to monitor your heart rate. Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) is a transthoracic interpretation of electrical activity of the heart over time captured and recorded by skin electrodes.
The iPhonECG app, in conjunction with a new device case that features two electrodes, can effectively monitor your heart rate. The case, with iPhone 4, is placed on your hands or chest and the compliment app identifies and charts your heart rhythm.
The video below includes a great demo of the system and brings a smirk to my face. This is stuff we see in science fiction movies!
LifetoneTechnology will introduce the device at CES 2011.

I disagree – this is an amazing device that would be very useful for outpatient rhythm monitoring to catch arrhythmia (ie event/symptom based use to replace holter and implantable monitors). This is a million (and then some) dollar idea.
FINALLY! I don’t have to wear a damned Holter monitor for 48 hours anymore. I’m buying this as soon as it’s available. My Cardiologist will love this because I can instantly track my arrhythmias as they happen. If you aren’t impressed by this App and case then you are blessed with a healthy heart. For me, this will be a God-send. Thanks for posting about this new App. Really, Thank-you so much.
If you think this is going to replace a Holter or a proper 12-lead ECG….well…it won’t.

So Apple brought us the PADD from Star Trek in the form of the iPad and third party devs are turning the iPhone into a medical tricorder.
This is certainly headline grabbing stuff. But I am not sure if it is as impressive as it sounds; I would wait for the pricing announcement at CES.
Portable ECG machines for consumers are already available costing $150 to $300 depending on features. So yes, maybe a first for a smart phone; but no, it is not a first for such a portable solutions/device.
Basically, with appropriate hardware addition/interface, you can use iPhone for anything you like – such as blood sugar monitor, pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitor, or even defibrillator etc. The main thing is whether there is will to do that. ECG is probably one of the easiest to do as you only need to two electrodes.
Ever since watching ‘The Human Centipede’ on Netflix I’ve found doctors very disturbingly weird.
i think this is great. abnormal r/r can be recorded then taken to your doctor. plus if a health care consumer is on hopice or home health the nurse can record vital information for the doctor. i will be glad when i can purchase one for my personal and profession life.
