iOS 4.3 Drops Support For iPhone 3G & Second Generation iPod Touch
With the release of the first beta of iOS 4.3, it looks like Apple has dropped support for the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch. As seen in the developer portal, neither the iPhone 3G or second-generation iPod touch are listed.
Currently, as of iOS 4.3 Beta 1, the following devices are supported:
- iPad
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 3GS
- iPod touch Fourth Generation
- iPod touch Third Generation
Last year, some users installed iOS 4 on their iPhone 3G devices which was followed with complaints of the iPhone 3G being very slow and almost unusable. iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2 did not do much to improve the situation. These problems were mostly due to the slow processor and less RAM in the iPhone 3G.
However, the unlisted devices may make an appearance in iOS 4.3 Beta 2, but if not, it seems that iOS 4.2 will be the latest firmware for the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch.

It would be not very nice, especially for those of us in Canada on 3 year contracts who own and still use iPhone 3G. I want to upgrade mine eventually but it would be around this summer when the new iPhone 5 comes out. I hope they will reconsider it.
It was coming since iOS 4 was out. Although the 3G has gotten considerably better and still supporting some features and when jailbroken runs pretty much everything the 4 does rather well.
But we saw this coming for a long time…..
They should have dropped support before iOS 4.0.
Its understandable due to the fast advancements of the mobile market, Apple cannot allow their software to be lacking because they need to keep the software requirements low for older devices. What is a little rude to the customers is they were still offering the 3G model early last year (2010) after signing a contract with a carrier to find out your phone will no longer get updates before you even finish your first year wouldn’t sit to well with some customers.
Just to think of it, come June/July when the next iPhone model is released, will the 3Gs get the axe with iOS 5 aswell?
that is what i’m afraid of. i signed onto a 3 year contract back in Aug with a 3Gs :/
Darn, I thought my iPod Touch 2G could last at least until June 2011 when iOS 5.0 comes out, can’t say I’m really surprised though.
Yeah, I’m only 1 year in to my contract with my 3GS. I had hoped to not buy another iPhone until my contract runs out in January of 2013!
I’m still rocking iOS 3.1.2 on my iPhone 3G. The functions of the phone all do the same core things it’s suppose to (calling, texting, browsing, emailing, music, calendar). The only thing that’s been a large annoyance is the inability to download certain applications that require 3.1.3 or higher to install.
It is sad but new software requires more processing power. I guess it was a matter of time.
Lol article edit fail… Read supported devices carefully. Then read the last paragraph. Apparently apple doesn’t like the fourth gen iPod touch too much. Apples newest device doesn’t deserve the newest firmware. (according to this article)
Thats rediculous… apples software (4.0) ruined my 3g and now they are abandoning the handset completely!
Sounds to me like they a built in self destruction mechanism and are now forcing us to upgrade!!!!
