Telus Launches New $60 Voice & Data Flex Plan For iPhone

In November 2010, Telus introduced “Flex Data” to its existing iPhone plans. Then, Telus expanded the Flex Data to their, at the time, Student 55 iPhone plan.

Student $55 iPhone plan

The Student $55 iPhone voice & data plan with flex data was a very competitive plan with some great features such as My10, Unlimited Messaging, and flex data. Even better, you did not actually have to be a student to qualify for the plan.

For those wondering what flexible data means, lets use the $55 Student Plan as an example.

At the $55 price, users get 1GB of data. If that data amount is exceeded, instead of paying per MB overage fees, the plan is automatically bumped to $75 with 2GB of data. If 2GB of data is exceeded, the plan is bumped to $95 with 5GB of data. Anything over 5GB however is charged at $0.05/MB.

Each month, the $55 plan resets back to the lowest $55/1GB tier and then increases again when the data is exceeded during the month.

For reference, that plan is detailed below:

  • Minutes: 200 daytime
  • Evenings/Weekends: Unlimited @ 6PM
  • Data: 1GB
  • Promotions: Unlimited Text/Picture/Video messages, My10 Nationwide, Free Voicemail 3

$60 Is The New $55

To be competitive against Virgin Mobile’s new $60 plan, Telus has now launched a new $60 voice and data flex plan, expiring on March 1, 2011.

Believe it or not, this “new” $60 plan is identical to the now expired $55 voice and data flex plan. The features are the same. Only the price is increased by $5! Bad Telus!

For reference, the “new” $60 plan is detailed below:

  • Minutes: 200 daytime
  • Evenings/Weekends: Unlimited @ 6PM
  • Data: 1GB
  • Promotions: Unlimited Text/Picture/Video messages, My10 Nationwide, Free Voicemail 3
  • Data flex details: At the $60 price, users get 1GB of data. If that data amount is exceeded, instead of paying per MB overage fees, the plan is automatically bumped to $80 with 2GB of data. If 2GB of data is exceeded, the plan is bumped to $100 with 5GB of data. Anything over 5GB however is charged at $0.05/MB.

Sneaky.

Throw in callerID and it wouldn’t be so bad. I’ve been a prepaid cell user for the past 6-8 years because they always leave out the callerID, knowing full well that most people will pay extra for it. The profit is always in the extras.

Get yourself a plan from Mobilicity or Wind for $45/month and that includes no contract and everything even north American long distance. I have heard people are using unlocked iPhones with these carriers.

Except Wind & Mobilicity don’t provide service in my area.

My god someone has to stop these companies, we pay the most in the world, the world, for what we have. I pay close to that but i have 6 gigs, signed up for it when i got the iphone. But its still a hefty sum.

Auto-bumping? That is what Bell sold me for a stick a couple years ago. Instead, I had to deal with a $2,200 dollar bill for ONE stinking month of internet! Holy cow – how did an auto-bumping plan get changed? I was sold on one, but actually signed their new plan that had just come into effect the day before. Bell eventually knocked the bill down to $700, and wouldn’t budge any further.

I would have loved having a plan that auto-bumps you to the next level.

That’s the way they should all be – pay for what you use, and not be given absolutely ridiculous statements like what I had.

I tried to switch to this plan off of my current plan and telus said this plan is only available to new customers? WTF? So no savings offered to their existing clients? Is it possible to switch to this plan off of my current one or am I dreaming?

It is possible. You just got a foolish rep.

Try to get someone else or speak to Loyalties.

No way, Wind and Mobilicity do not work with Iphone. I think that’s exactly how Telus, Rogers, Bell and Fido can charge so high on monthly bill.

I retract that.. i just switched 😀

Evenings/Weekends is only local. Long distance by default is an insane 40cents/min. Caller ID which should be built-in is a ridiculous $8/month.

As of today I will no longer use Telus for anything. They would rather lose a 16 yr customer who has a land line, internet, tv and cell phone thru them then give me a break since my 3 mos old smart phone was stolen. They can kiss my a$$ and I willl gladly take my business elsewhere. DONE WITH TELUS!
