Sony: Image Sensors Delayed For Apple; 8MP Camera For iPhone 5?

On Friday, Walt Mossberg conducted an interview with Sony’s CEO, Sir Howard Stringer. In a rather interesting note, Stringer reportedly said that their camera image sensor facility in Sendai was affected by the tsunami which was causing delays for image sensors to Apple.

Stinger said something to the effect of: “Our best senor technology is built in one of the (tsunami) affected factories. Those go to Apple for their iPhones…or iPads. Isn’t that something? They buy our best sensors from us?”

The worthy point here is that Sony is not known to make any sensors for Apple. This assumes that the cameras are for an unreleased Apple product that may be in the early stages of production.

With Sony possibly supply camera sensors to Apple, this brings attention back to an April 2010 report from Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar claiming that Sony had been chosen to provide image sensors for the iPhone 5 coming in at 8 megapixels.

The same report also predicted a 5 megapixel sensor for the iPhone 4.

So, iPhone 5 to feature an 8 megapixel camera?

Yes the iPhone released in 2012 will have an 8mp camera NOT the one released this summer 2011!!! This upcoming model will carry the same 5mp camera but will have 1080p recording with the help of the new A5 processor… The more likely upgraded camera will be the front facing camera and it will be updated to a 0.7mp for FaceTime HD.
