Apple’s Phil Schiller Says White iPhone 4 Is Not Thicker

Hours after the white iPhone 4 was released, savvy users immediately noticed that the new white device was slightly thicker than its black colored counterpart.

Today, in an unusual move, Apple VP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller challenged the observation in a direct message via Twitter to Ernesto Barron. Schiller insisted that the white model was the same size as the black model iPhone 4, despite hands-on tests.

The claim that the two devices are the same thickness is interesting, especially considering that owners of the white iPhone 4 have made side-by-side comparisons that show a thicker design. Moreover, users have had difficulty with cases that normally fit fine on the black model iPhone 4.

While there has been no official news on why the white iPhone 4 is thicker, speculation has pointed to a thicker layer of material to protect against UV damage.

Schiller is correct: the white IP4 is not thicker. It’s the faceplate that is thicker. The actual body, minus the faceplate and backplate, is exactly the same size as the black IP4.

But faceplate is a part of the iphone, therefore, the white iphone is thicker.

when you manufacture something, there’s an error in how thick/thin something is made, or ie precision. usually it would be set to say 19mm +-1% or +-0.1%, so maybe 99% or 99.9% of white iphones are the same as the black iphones, but this 0.1% that people have gotten so far are slightly larger….or they’re table isnt straight…or with the iphone, there is so much news and garbage floating on the internet, how knows or who cares what’s true or what isnt/

Too much stats learning in school? Right now 100% of the white iPhones are thicker, has nothing to do with error or standard deviation etc.
