Is Your iPhone 3GS Missing Some iOS 5 Features?

With the launch of iOS 5 beta, Apple confirmed that the latest firmware is compatible with the iPhone 3GS. However, we have received some reports that iPhone 3GS users on iOS 5 may have some iOS 5 features disabled.

So far it seems that iPhone 3GS users are affected as follows:

  • Significantly slower performance than the iPhone 4
  • No access to photo editing features via the Photos app
  • No camera access from the lock screen as with the iPhone 4

iPhone 3G users will be familiar with past firmware when iPhone 3GS users received the multitasking feature but iPhone 3G users were cut off.

If you own an iPhone 3GS that has iOS 5 loaded, what features have you not been able to use? Post your finds below!

I’m running iOS 5.0 on my iphone 3GS! 🙂 I find it’s just as slow as 4.3, and there are no options to edit photos while browsing them, but I do have the shortcut to camera on the lock screen… also love the volume up key can be used to take the photo! So far everything seems to be working (including find my iphone….!?)

Of course there is camera access, you just need to double “click” the home button.

How’s your battery? My wife’s 3gs has horrible performance with ios 5, like 4-6 hours (without using it).

I installed 5.0 around 5:30 this afternoon, and just plugged it in around 10:30 and was at 43%, mostly using it to sms and tweet, took a couple of photos and small surfing. I found that my 3GS is super hot though in no time at all… time will tell. May need to look at getting a new battery as i’ve had the phone now for 2 years …

Why should this come as a shock to anyone re: performance for 3gs? 3g users basically had their phone crippled (in terms of functionality) by the last firmware available to that model. This was inevitable for 3gs users and it looks like this will be the final nail in the coffin for those of us that still own this particular model. I’ll stay on 4.3.1 and just keep it jailbroken with the tweaks that are now offered by Apple. In the end what would I have gained by upgrading to iOS5 except a significant drop in performance/response time?

Keep in mind that iOS 5 is in beta 1. The performance and battery life of the current version shouldn’t be an issue because all of the debugging services and bugs in the betas will (hopefully) be gone in the GM.
