Can iCloud Store Music In Canada? Not Yet.

With the Beta release of iOS 5 and iCloud, Apple explained that iCloud stores your music, photos, apps, calendars, documents, and more.

When content is downloaded on one device, iCloud wirelessly pushes it to all your devices. This is also how the new “Automatic Downloads” feature is also supposed to work. Unfortunately, Canadians on iOS 4.3.3 or iOS 5 may be left out of the game for a bit.

Thus far, with my Canadian iTunes account, I get the option to store books and apps via Automatic Download, but music is not enabled. For example, if you navigate to Settings > Store you should see the toggles. Even though I have books and apps enabled (music toggle is US only), I have yet to successfully see app downloads update accross my devices. So it may be more than just music that is not available in Canada.

For example, if I enable Automatic Downloads on both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 and download an app on my iPhone 4, it doesn’t show up on my iPad 2, even though the Automatic Download toggles are enabled.

According to the fine print on Apple’s website:

Some music features of iCloud are available in beta now in the U.S. only and require iOS 4.3.3 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM model), iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2, or a Mac or PC with iTunes 10.3. Download iTunes 10.3 free.

It is clear that music will not work, but have you been able to get apps or books to sync across devices automatically?

Update 1: After some more digging, it seems you have to enable “Automatic Downloads” in iTunes. So when you download an app on your iPhone, it will show up in iTunes and vice versa. To do so open iTunes, go to Preferences, go to the Store tab and enable Apps and Books. However, I’m still not available to see purchases automatically download across iOS devices.

Update 2: From Apple:

*Automatic downloads and downloading of purchase history available in beta now and require iOS 4.3.3 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM model), iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2, or a Mac or PC with iTunes 10.3.

Even though Apple fine print says that iOS 4.3.3 works with Automatic Downloads, it seems that you really must have iOS 5. However, some users are reporting success on iOS 4.3.3.

With 4.3.3 I was able to turn on the auto download on my iPhone4, then when I downloaded an app in iTunes it automagically appeared on the last screen of apps on my phone. I haven’t turned it on on my iPad to see if I have the same issue as you’ve had..

It worked for me with my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. I turned on the sharing setting on both my phone and iPad then on the phone I found a universal app in the store ( it was a free one, shark bite or something like that) clicked buy it, entered my password and it started pitting on my phone. It put the grayed out icon with the loading bar and was thinking for ~30 seconds then it showed up on my iPad and they both downloaded at the same time.
Hope that helps if anyone wants to try it.

Music licensing might not be complete in Canada yet. its often the case where the publishers have agreed but hit snags in the Canadian markets, because they will require separate agreements, its a pain in the ass, since the content involved is the same as well as the market. I would understand if we were in Asia or something but dam its the same market so to speak. UK has less issues they except blanket agreements world wide, in fact they don’t have to get separate ones for streaming.

It is working perfectly for me on the Apps side…on books it is working but it asked me to authenticate my iTunes password before downloading the books…but they were there waiting. I haven’t tried again…I have done about 5 apps though and it works perfectly.

If you have a US account you can also log in and use the music feature as well…I had only purchased about 15 songs from there but they were all in the history and I could re-download them no problem.

The Canadian and American music markets are so different, I could talk about it for ever… Ex: the only place where music really can sell is in Quebec.. Actually, an artist that sells in quebec, beats any canadian artist on the album sold charts…

My iPhone is jail broken with 4.3.2, iPad 2 running 4.3.3

Downloads work automatically through all devices. All store settings are checked to turn auto downloads on, including iTunes.

Gotta say I really like the feature, but it doesn’t at all require iOS 5 to work completely.

Music won’t happen for a while, look at Netflix. To be fair, apple has a much larger pull so things may be different.

Living in the uk
Apps and books are auto downloading for me from mac iTunes 10.3.1 to iPhone 4.3.3 don’t know about music not tried it.
But I have found that if you have your phone plugged into your computer and you download anything (apps or books) from iTunes desktop it will sent it to your phone but if the desktop finishes before your phone you can not just sync the phone to cancel the download you have to wait for the phone to download the apps as well
