Cheaper Macs For Canada?

Living in Canada has it’s advantages like poutine, beaver tails, cottages and hockey. But there are a few disadvantages as well – one being higher prices for Apple products. Come on Apple give us a break! According to 9 to 5 Mac, we may be in luck and could see better prices soon.

In the past Apple has altered the price of its products to compensate for the differences in currency. Now with the value of the US dollar dropping and the Canadian dollar actually being stronger, we could see a price change.

According to WolframAlpha, at the time of writing, $1 (Canadian) = $1.05 (US) which is great for us. So I think Apple should get just rid of that extra $50 or so.

Now, I’m excited to see when this Lion thing is coming out and what hardware comes along with it. Are you?

Apple woudn’t drop price unless its competitors do so. Most companies do not set prices of their products based on production costs or exchange rates. The most important factor is “competition.” If other Canadian retailors keep ripping off Canadians, Apple has no incentive to lower its price to the level of U.S. price. Apple Canada knows well that Canadian custom protects Canadians retailors from cross-border shopping.

they protect Canadian retailers in which ways?
if you stay for 2 nights or more, you can buy up to 400$ per person without paying any taxes or duty fees.
if you go over or stay for less than 2 nights, you only pay the taxes (GST or HST) for electronics goods (like computers).

If you buy 20 computers, it might be a problem… but only one or two, not problem at all…

Actually Apple is one of the few companies that adjust prices based on the countries currency. Just today Apple changed pricing of Apps in certain countries due to the change in value of currency.

Hope I am allowed to post link to another rumor site 😛 –> http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/13/apple-adjusts-international-app-store-prices/

I agree with you. Look how long the Canadian dollar has gotten better and nothing has changed in this country. We are constantly getting ripped off for everything so I don’t see this happening.

Are you sure? There’s no upgrade activation fee for AT&T, and less tax in the US => how can an iphone from Rogers be cheaper than AT&T haha funny.

Rogers is $159

AT&T is $199

I’m sure they both have activation fees … I think Rogers did this to sweeten the deal so people sign contracts rather the buy it out right.

2 year contract price for AT&T – $199

3 year contract price for Robelus – $159

I’d rather the 2 year contract.

There is NO activation fees for upgrading (renew contract) for AT&T. You only need to pay activation fees ONCE for a new line with AT&T, with Rogers you have to pay activation fees EVERYTIME you upgrade your iphone (+tax of course). You need to do more calculation and research.

Apple has been gouging Canadian consumers (even over their usual ‘premium’ price) for years, from their retail products to their online refurb store. It would be nice to see more realistic prices – especially as their products are not made in the US, but in far cheaper China/Taiwan – but its hard to imagine Apple wishing to give up that cash cow.

I am note sure when the news was published. At some point, Obama complained about Canadian custom charges higher custom tax barrier than US counterpart. He basically asked Canadian government make the same rule as US. ($200 exemption for EVERY shopper) Obviously, Canadian government said no to protect Canadian retailers. I am not saying that what Canadian government is totally wrong. I believe that it should have good reasons to make a bigger barrier for cross border shopping. If there were no protection as you said, why would not Canadian government complied with what Obama wanted? Whether you want to admit or not, there is a barrier for cross shopping.

Totally non-sense.. When you buy a phone with a discounted price, you have to think about the monthly fee you are going to pay. In the US, (1) There is no separate charge for Long Distance, (2) no call display charge, (3) no voice mail charge and (4) no mobile-to-mobile charge. If you had a monthly plan with Rogers similar to AT&T ones, you would end up paying a lot more even with 3 year contract. Basically, yes, you are paying 40 dollars less but you eventually paying much more for 3 years.

Everybody is off the map here … We all know Robelus is the most expensive in the world … That’s not the discussion … We are talking purely about hardware … Apples to apples (pun not intended) Canada is cheaper then the states. Grand scheme of things were not even close but lets talk about hardware.
