iOS Features: YouTube Audio In Background Multitasking

People are always requesting newer and better features for the iPhone and one of the most requested iPhone functions that comes to mind is the ability to play YouTube content in the background.

For a long time, users could only play YouTube content while in the app. If you were listening to your favorite song and then exited the YouTube app, the song would stop playing.

With recent iOS updates, you can now play YouTube content in the background! For example, if you have a YouTube video playing of your favorite song, you can now exit the YouTube app, open the multitasking tray to hit the Play button and the content will continue to play in the background.

Furthermore, by opening the multitasking tray you can pause/play the content and you’ll also notice that the “Music” (or iPod icon for iOS 4 users) icon in the multitasking tray is replaced with the YouTube icon.

Now you can play YouTube content in the background while being able to browse the web, text, or compose an email! Check it out!

This works in iOS 4 too. I can do that right now and I’m using iOS 4.3.5.

This feature has been around since iOS 4. 🙂 But I’m not sure how many people actually noticed on their own. It’s very useful and definitely worth posting about.

this feature has been available a while now and also applies to playing content in safari.

this old news but i guess it depends on what you consider ‘recent’.

This feature is work on 4.3.2 too.

I always do it to play Videos Playlist from iPod App.
For iPod App, we need to kill it in multitask first.
Then, we can play it as audio playlist from earphone remote bottom.

Okay, I don’t have the YouTube icon, it’s Safari. I thought using the native YouTube app was crap quality. Has it changed? I have YouTube as a Add To Homescreen thingy, great quality. Am I out of the loop?

Just want to add that yes, it does play in background the way I access YouTube. It has since I can remember first loading it on homescreen via Safari.

I cannot believe I missed this. It always pissed me off that I “had” to leave the app open with the screen on. Thanks haha
