Apple was recently challenged for its claim the iPhone 4 was the ‘world’s thinnest smartphone’, compared to rival Samsung’s Galaxy S II. Apple ended up winning that battle, according to the Guardian.
To help judge the exact title for the thinnest smartphone, in stepped the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). What is the role of the ASA?
The ASA is the UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media, including marketing on websites. We work to ensure ads are legal, decent, honest and truthful by applying the Advertising Codes.
The ASA had received a complaint about Apple’s iPhone 4 ad, so out came the measuring tapes–and Apple’s statement to the ASA comparing the iPhone 4 dimensions to the Samsung Galaxy S II:
“Apple pointed out that the Galaxy S II had prominent bulges at the top of the device…Apple said consumers would not be interested in the thinnest part of the device, but in its overall measurements, as these would, for example, affect whether the device could fit into a pocket or purse.”
The thinnest part of the Galaxy S II is 8.71mm vs 9.3mm on the iPhone 4. However, the thickest part of the Galaxy S II measures 9.91mm. So when it comes to overall thinness, the iPhone 4 wins, as the ASA agreed:
“because the iPhone 4’s thickest point was thinner than the thickest point of the Samsung Galaxy S II”
It makes sense to compare the thickest parts of both phones to boast which phone would be the thinnest. If thinness was measured by the slimmest parts, a manufacture could just create an extreme tapered design (think MacBook Air) and call it the thinnest smartphone ever. What do you think?

If that were true, then Apple would have many legitimate cases. Also what goes on the inside of the Samsung is far ahead of the ip4 for hardware, so much for lack of innovation. I would call Apple the trend setter if anything, companies are always going to model similar to the going trend.

Are you forgetting that Samsung has a REPLACEABLE battery? This fact alone and that they were able to keep >90% of the phone @ 8.71mm
Samsung is a clear winner here even with a small part that’s slightly thicker than the WHOLE iPhone.
I don’t remember the last time I’ve had to replace a cellphone battery. With car chargers and portable packs everywhere, that feature isn’t relevant anymore in my books.
Might not be relevant to you, but it sure is to a lot of other people. Swapping batteries is far cheaper and a better option than packs if you ask me. Also the Samsung only has a bulge at the bottom, the rest of the phone is thinner. By definition it may not be thinner, but realistically the effect of being thinner is valid.
There are tons of cheap iPhone battery packs on fleebay. Got one “just in case” a year ago but with car chargers etc I haven’t had to use it yet.
Not everyone has the time to wait around for a battery to be charged, especially if you’re a phone-busy type person. Replacing a battery is much quicker.
Being thin isn’t everything. The competition also has a 4.3″ screen, 8MB cam, dual-core, BT 3.0, MicroSD, and much better video playback compatibility with flash support. The way I see it, Apple is the one playing catch-up now. They better blow away the competition with the iPhone 5 / 4GS or whatever it’s going to be called.

Oh be quiet. The GSII is thinner, point finale. Who cares if it bulges at the bottom? Where you hold it, its thinner. Oh and its also ridiculously light. I don’t care about weight though.
