Gmail iPhone App is Now Back in the App Store

The Gmail iOS app has made its way back to the App Store. A couple weeks ago it was introduced and turned out to be somewhat of a dud as pushed notifications did not work as advertised, and other users experienced bugs. The ‘new’ app now supports push notifications, and finally image HTML messages now fit to the screen (multiple account support coming soon). You will need to uninstall and reinstall the app, or logout of the old app to see the changes.
The Gmail blog details the changes:
Two weeks ago, we introduced our Gmail app for iOS. Unfortunately it contained a bug which broke notifications and displayed an error message, so we removed it from the App Store. We’ve fixed the bug and notifications are now working, and the app is back in the App Store. For an overview of what’s available in the Gmail app for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, check out this blog post.
In the short time the app was public we received a lot of helpful feedback and feature requests. This included requests for everything from bigger features like multiple account support to customizations like improved notifications and mobile specific signatures.
We’re just getting started with the Gmail app for iOS and will be iterating rapidly to bring you more features, including all the ones listed above plus many more. Based on your comments we have already improved our handling of image HTML messages – they are now sized to fit to the screen and you can pinch to zoom in.
To try out the Gmail app today, install it from App Store on any iOS 4+ device. Those who already have the Gmail app released Nov 2 must uninstall or log out of the old app prior to installing the new app.

Can’t find it in the app store? Searched Gmail and Google, no luck
Click on my download link in the post. It’s propagating in search results still, like last time.
Same here. No luck finding it.
Got it,. loaded up this page on the iphone followed the “Click here to download’, it jumped into the app store with the Gmail app loaded…
Funny after installing went back and searched for it, still doesn’t show up…
So how is this different than going to gmail.com in safari? I find 80% of apps are a waste of time and space because it’s just the mobile version of that site with an app icon
– Push notifications (although buggy by my experience, and above comments).
– Being able to use your phone contacts when composing, in addition to your gmail contacts.
– Being able to attach photos form your albums (photos are resized).
When I get an email, the sounds alerts me and i see the badge but I don’t see anything in the notification center. I checked the settings and notification center is turned on. Anyone else have this problem?
Me too.
I tried resetting the app (in Settings) and also deleted it and redownloaded the app and still the same thing.
But at least you get the badge change… I get NOTHING. And it’s well-enabled in notification centre.
How pathetic.
I have the same issue.
Kind of useless for the following 2 reasons:
1. It doesn’t allow Banner Notifications in iOS 5 like the built-in Mail does so if you’re not looking directly at the app icon you won’t know if mail came in
2. It uses the default notification sound with no way to customize it, so even when it makes the sound you have no idea that it’s Gmail that has new mail
created a gmail exchange account to have banners then use the gmail app
I looked in the app store and it’s not there
im going to stick to the original mail app on the OS. This gmail app doesn’t have the option to put banner. Ill wait until they have it available. But a cool feature in this gmail app is that when you swipe towards the right you can see all your folders. Pretty neat.
I created a gmail exchange account to have banners when I receive the notifiaction then I go in the gmail app
Why would someone use it if there is already a mail app integrated into the iPhone that works perfectly for Gmail? Can someone please explain what I am missing?
Just another way to view your emails.
I dont see the need for me to switch. I dont get a ton of emails so I dont need to use starred or labels… But if you want those features then this app could be for you
Does anyone know how to switch off the new mail notification sound?
Go to notification center
Go to notification center
I share an iPad with my wife, so I’m hoping this new gmail app will be a good way for me to keep my emails separate from hers. So far I am disappointed, #1 you can’t change the notification sound from the default tri-tone (which is the same as the default, also unchangeable Facebook notification…) and #2 it doesn’t work with notification center even though I have that setting turned on. But other than that, I suppose it’s a solid offering from Google. With any luck they’ll update the app soon to address & rectify these 2 issues.
Another annoyance, when replying to an email, all previous text from the email chain has stupid triangles >>> in front, makes me feel like I’ve time warped to 1999… C’mon Google.
1) The app doesn’t include gtalk, so I still need to use the browser.
2) Can’t send emails with alternate smtp accounts that I set in gmail
I don’t see what the big deal is about this app. It’s the web app with an icon, which I already had make from a bookmark….. I was hoping it would be like the Mail app with the web features…
