Toronto Crimestoppers iPhone App Officially Announced for Download

For those in Toronto, you can now get engaged with the Crimestoppers program via your iPhone. The organization has launched a new free app to enable citizens to submit tips anonymously, protected by the Supreme Court of Canada. According to an interview with the Canadian Press:

Const. Martin Douglas, Toronto Crime Stoppers youth and social media officer, says the organization receives over 200 anonymous tips per week.

He says many people who witness crimes often don’t report them for fear of being identified, but with this app, says Douglas, police and Crime Stoppers hope bystanders will “feel more empowered to be socially responsible and take action.”

Here’s what the app can do:

With this new technology the user has the ability to:

•Record a video or photograph for easy tip submission.
•Find the nearest police station using GPS and receive turn by turn directions.
•Check the status of submitted tips.
•View Toronto’s “Most Wanted”.
•One touch calling directly to a Crime Stoppers Representative.
•One touch email composition to submit an email tip.
•View Toronto’s “Crime of the Week”.
•Connect with Toronto Crime Stoppers Social Media Pages.

Definitely a fantastic idea. With the growing number of smartphone users and everything being captured via mobile, this is a pretty smart move. The app has been out since May, but the official announcement came today. Let us know how you like the free app.

The app is a great idea, but could they really not think of a better name for “Crime of the Week?” It sounds like a competition

I guess that motivates people to get involved for that $2K reward.

If people stopped committing crimes, people wouldn’t have to.
