Apple iPad Mini Launch Event ‘Confirmed’ for October 23 [Update]

Apple lovers everywhere are breathing a collective sigh of relief after the expected iPad Mini launch event invitations were nowhere to be seen yesterday. According to John Paczkowski over at AllThingsD, Apple will unveil the ‘iPad Mini’ at an invitation-only event on October 23, 2012.

The event was given further credence by the well-connected Jim Dalrymple from The Loop:

 Yep.

While October 23 may be a date that breaks tradition (being a Tuesday and not the traditional Wednesday used by Apple for announcements), there may be compelling reasons for the shift (which may be related to the Microsoft Surface launch later that week or Apple’s earning report for the latest quarter being delivered just two days later).

So while we now have a date there is no word yet on the place, though most expect it will be held at Apple’s Town Hall Auditorium (the place used to deliver important past-products like OS X Lion, a next-generation MacBook Air and the iPhone 4S).

Are you relieved? Are you busy adjusting your holiday wish list? What rumoured feature of the iPad Mini are you most looking forward to (smaller screen size, lightning connector, thinner form-factor)?

Update: Bloomberg also notes their sources say an October 23rd event will take place:

Apple may unveil a smaller version of the iPad at an event on Oct. 23, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the plans aren’t public.

The new model will have a screen that’s 7 inches to 8 inches diagonally, less than the current 9.7-inch version, people familiar with the designs said in July.

Update 2: Reuters is also reporting an Oct. 23rd event will take place:

Apple Inc will host an event on October 23 where it is expected to unveil a smaller iPad that will take on the less expensive devices offered by Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc, a source familiar with the matter said on Friday.

Galaxy Note II launches in US on October 24th. Good timing Apple. 😉

They wouldn’t do such a thing to ensure some wind comes out of ol’ Sammy’s sails now, would they? If someone could build a business strategy simulation game that featured Apple and it’s competitors, I’d play it!

Love that the headline reads “confirmed” when it’s anything but. Until Apple sends out invites it’s simply a rumour. It may be correct but it’s not confirmed. Journalism at its best.

The ever-connected Jim Dalrymple over at The Loop gave the report a “Yep”, which pretty much guarantees it’ll happen.

If you’re a follower of Jim…he knows. Pretty sure he has Apple employees hiding in his basement.

On a serious note, Jim gets invited to Apple events and has deep connections within the company.

I’ve got my Retina iPad. So, I’ll be watching this as an important announcement and presentation by Apple, and not to put an item in my wish list. Now if Apple were to announce a smart watch that syncs with iOS devices…. 🙂

You seem to have missed the pebble e-paper watch

I have not. I’m well aware of Pebble and Strata by MetaWatch. But Apple SDK allows limited access to the Bluetooth stack. I’m hoping for a smart watch from Apple with full access to all the goodies the iPhone and iPad have to offer 🙂

Perhaps it’s just me, an Apple lover, but the luster seems to be slowly fading over these announcements-due in large part to excellent sources.
We know Apple is great I jut want them to excite like before. It’s why I see people going to Android, not because its better but rather, feels fresh, creative, etc.

So I wonder if this’ll be the day that iTunes 11 releases as well. I was hoping it’d be sooner than that. That’s all I’m really looking forward to at the moment. Was hoping they’d release it on the 11th (since it’s iTunes 11) but alas, that date came and went.
