Apple TV 6.0 Update Has Been Pulled After Reports Of Bricking and Networking Issues
Apple TV got updated to version 6.0 on Friday with iTunes Radio, iCloud Photos, and more. There have been many reports of botched updates forcing the user to restore their Apple TV.
Last night, Apple took down the on-device update. Users that are on version 5.3 are now seeing no update available.
One of our readers, Shawn Rouse, first reported this and gave this link to an Apple discussion page. Reports continue to grow of Apple TV’s being bricked because of the update. Other users are experiencing networking and Wi-Fi issues.
I was able to update to 6.0 on my Apple TV on Friday and I am not experiencing any issues so far.

I had to buy a micro usb cable and restore it on my computer..
I had to but a micro USB too for my ATV3 & connect to iTunes. Apple should include a micro USB with the ATV if they are going to brick them 😉
Had to do the same
Same here. Had to try 2 different micro USB cables. Apparently there’s one that only suitable for charging, and one that’s for charging and syncing. I needed the second to unbrick my ATV2
I bricked mine. I updated with Apple TV on wired network. The screen showed me to connect to Itune. Need to get a micro USB to restore it. Question for those updated with no problem, do you guys updated wired or wireless? I heard wireless might be the solution.
Yeah, why isn’t it a lightning connector or something they’ve already made us buy? 😉
I was able to update successfully. That sucks that others are having issues with it.
Updated and no issues.
So far, so good. Need to monitor.
Happened to me as well… Great now I have to get a micro USB cable, this along with the iTunes podcast bug are making this weeks updates quite the hassle
I had to buy a micro USB cable and restore from iTunes after updating my ATV2. The update left my ATV2 dark, with a fast blinking white LED on the front. Restore fixed it all.
I’m sorry for the ones who got problems with the upgrading. I upgraded my 2 AppleTVs without problem.
I thought i was the only one who got the bricking issue! Good thing it did not totally brick it and that I could restore it with iTunes.
Updated 2 perfectly, 3rd one had to be restored via iTunes. It’s good now though.
Perhaps it was an unrelated issue, but I experienced serious networking issues today when attempting to use my Apple TV. Every time I started to stream via AirPlay, my *entire* network would shutdown and I had to restart my wireless router.
Actually, I had some issues yesterday as well. I was trying to stream music from the iTunes store and it kept pausing for long periods of time (a few minutes at one point). I had some AirPlay streaming issues as well where the sound was all staticky in the left speaker. A restart of iTunes seemed to fix that though. Still, weird stuff in the last few days.
Thanks for the mention. The link in the ending paragraph is broken, here’s the correct URL – http://bit.ly/1frwZVz . Looking forward to getting the 6.0 update eventually!
Thanks Shawn, fixed!
Updated 2 days ago. No problems so far.
I did have to connect mine to iTunes and restore it. Haven’t notice any other issues so far.
now i understand why i was not able to see the update yesterday.
Yeah it makes sense now, but at the time nobody knew what was going on.
For the first time ever I had an issue. Did the upgrade Friday evening and was met with the screen telling me I had to connect to iTunes to restore but I managed to get it going again after a restore.
i updated both of my ATVs on Friday night. no issues. watched lady gaga on itunes festival right after the upgrade. i haven’t used either since.
I didn’t experience any problem updating my AppleTV and it works fine with networked content.
