Apple Opts for Thinner LED Backlight Components for Next-Generation iPhone/iPad

The iPhone 5s is only 7.6 mm thick, but it isn’t the world’s thinnest smartphone; that title belongs to another brand. But Apple can do more, and a recent report seems to reinforce that the next-generation iPhone and iPad will be much thinner, as the company will upgrade backlighting components to thinner ones, LEDinside claims (via MacRumors).

Apple currently uses 0.6 mm thick side-view LED backlights in the iPhone, and 0.8 mm thick components with the iPad. LEDinside’s sources say the company have opted for a thinner, 0.4 mm thick side-view LED backlight for the next-generation iPhone, and a 0.6 mm thick component for the next-generation iPad.

According to sources from Apple supply chain, the iPhone 6 is likely to be released in June 2014, and will have larger monitor size of 4.7”. Industry insiders also projected the iPhone 6 will have a much lighter frame, which will lead to upgrades in LED backlight specs. In the previous generation, the iPhone used 0.6t side-view type LED, in contrast the new iPhone will probably be adopting 0.4t side-view type LED.

It is important to mention here that while the LEDinside report talks about only one 4.7-inch iPhone model, earlier reports have mentioned two new handsets for this year, with the “high-end” model sporting a 5.5–5.7-inch display, if the rumours are correct.

Secondly, the report mentions a June launch, which is also kind of questionable, as the next-generation iPhone launch is widely expected to happen this fall.
