comScore: Apple Still Top Smartphone Manufacturer with 41.6% US Market Share

Apple kicked off 2014 as the top smartphone manufacturer in the US with 41.6% market share, but Android is still the most popular smartphone platform with 51.7% market share, the latest data from comScore’s MobiLens and Mobile Metrix reveals.

As of January 2014, smartphone market penetration stands at 66.8% in the US, with 159.8 million people owning a smartphone, up 7% since October. Of those, the iPhone was the choice of 41.6%, up 1% compared to the previous period. Samsung is a distant second with 26.7% (up 1.3%), while LG ranked third with 6.9% market share. Motorola was down 0.6% to 6.4%, and HTC 1.3% to 5.4%, since October 2013, comScore has found.

On the smartphone platform side, Android maintained its No. 1 spot despite Apple’s steady growth. However, it is apparently losing ground, as it has lost 0.5% market share and now accounts for 51.7%, while iOS has increased its market presence by 1% during the same period.

For BlackBerry, 2014 started with a loss of 0.5% market share (from 3.6% to 3.1%), while Microsoft remained flat – no loss, but no growth either. In total, iOS and Android now account for 93.3% of the US market, the comScore data shows.
