Report: Facebook is Developing a Video-Messaging App To Take On Snapchat

zuckerberg

According to a new report from the Financial Times, Facebook is developing an app to take on Snapchat after a failed attempt to purchase the popular messaging app for $3 billion last year.

The internal development of the new video-messaging app is personally being supervised by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The new app, much like Snapchat, will allow users to share videos and pictures in a few simple clicks and would disappear after one view.

The app has reportedly been in development for several months. Rumours have reported that the app could be released as early as this month and its internal development name is “Slingshot”.

Slingshot would not be the first attempt by Facebook to try and copy Snapchat’s formula. In 2012, the company failed miserably with Poke, a similar video-sharing app. Earlier this month, the company discontinued the app and removed it from the app store.

Just a few weeks ago, Snapchat released an update which now allows users to send video and text messages. After the update, a Kansas high-school teacher said she has never seen anything that disrupted her classroom more than the latest update from Snapchat.

Would you like to see a Snapchat competitor from Facebook and if the rumours are true, would you use the app? Let us know in the comments below.
