Apple Confirms iCloud Not Affected by ID Attack

Following initial reports from customers whose Apple accounts had been hacked and their iOS and Mac devices held hostage for ransom, Apple has issued a statement saying that the iCloud service wasn’t compromised.

Australian hack

In a short statement sent to ZDNet, Apple said the following:

“Apple takes security very seriously and iCloud was not compromised during this incident. Impacted users should change their Apple ID password as soon as possible and avoid using the same user name and password for multiple services. Any users who need additional help can contact AppleCare or visit their local Apple Retail Store.”

Since the initial reports came in from Australian users, the attacks have spread to New Zealand, the US and Canada. The source of the attack is still unknown, but posts in the Apple Support Communities forum are morphing into a group investigation, with everyone seeking to identify the cause.

As the Apple statement shows, the affected individuals should be only those who forgot to activate the two-step verification. So if you haven’t done so, you should enable it now.

I have avoided two step, as its really easy to be locked out of the cloud or iTunes just so happen to not have your device handy or you lost it. I have update my security questions and passwords. But then again maybe someone more knowledgeable on the two stage protocol could explain things a bit better.
