Sketchy Rumour Claims 30% Thinner ‘iPad Mini Air’ for 2014

Sources speaking with the Taiwanese Economic Daily News (via GforGames) claim that Apple will reduce the next-generation iPad mini’s thickness by 30%, and that this will be one of the key selling points of the 7.9-inch tablet.

Considering that the iPad mini with Retina display measures 7.5 mm in thickness, a 30% cut would mean the device would be only about 5.5 mm thick, according to the table provided in the EDN article. In the light of Apple’s move to increase thickness to implement the Retina display, the 30% reduction in iPad mini thickness is very much unlikely.

The same newspaper cites David Hsieh, vice president of NPD DisplaySearch, who revives the rumours of a 12.9-inch iPad Pro. You may recall that after reports of a bigger-screen iPad exploded at the beginning of the year, these claims were later silenced by reports of Apple icing its 12.9-inch iPad Pro plans at least for this year.

Now David Hsieh claims Apple will release a bigger-screen iPad Pro, but this won’t happen earlier than next year. He seems to be certain about Apple’s plans to diversify its iPad line with a 12.9-inch tablet, but that will happen only in 2015 if his sources are correct.
