Today YouTube, a Google-owned company, announced a new subscription streaming service called YouTube Music Key. The service offers ad-free music on YouTube, along with offline viewing and background playback.

The service, which is priced at $7.99, also includes access to Google Play Music. Google’s Spotify competitor gives users access to more than 30 million songs.

Google has also updated its YouTube apps for iOS and Android along with YouTube.com to support the Music Key beta. Music Key beta users will now see a “Music” tab, which provides playlist recommendations and also features trending music.

“Starting today, you’ll see a new home just for music on your YouTube app for Android, iOS and on YouTube.com that shows your favorite music videos, recommended music playlists based on what you’re into and playlists of trending music across YouTube. You can find a playlist to perfectly fit your mood, whether that’s a morning motivators playlist or Boyce Avenue YouTube Mix. Check out the newest songs from channels you subscribe to, like FKA twigs or Childish Gambino. Or quickly find the songs you’ve played over and over and over again.”

YouTube Music Key is currently in beta, with a worldwide launch expected in 2015. In order to access the Music Key beta users will have to wait for an invite. However, all Google Play Music subscribers will get immediate access to the beta version of the streaming service.

$10 a month for functionality that so many browser extensions can do for free?

You also get access to Google All Access Music, their music streaming service. I believe the price is cheaper than the usual 9.99 price, so it is a discount if you want to stream music like Spotify…

And at least for now… still no ads, which is a plus. Unfortunately I think that won’t last long. The mobile youtube website for ipad is starting to show ads now.
