VLC for iOS Preparing Return to the App Store as Beta Submitted to Apple

VLC for iOS could make its return into the App Store soon, according to Felix Paul Kühne, lead developer for the app for Mac and iOS. Kühne sent out the following tweet yesterday noting “The next version of VLC for iOS now awaits beta review by Apple and will hopefully be available to testers soon!”

Back in October, Kühne told users on the Videolan forums a new version for iOS 8 with support for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus was being worked on, after the app disappeared from the App Store.

VLC for iOS is currently looking for 500 beta testers through Apple’s TestFlight—users can register to join via this Google Doc here (most likely all spots have been filled).

The free and open source app allows users to play a variety of video formats on their iOS device without converting, either by transfer via iTunes or another source like Dropbox.

VLC was pulled from the App Store back in 2011 due to conflicts between the developers and Apple’s guidelines, and from there made its way into Cydia. The app returned last summer but then disappeared just prior to iOS 8’s release this fall, but now appears to be returning soon if all goes as planned.
