Rogers to Axe Smartphone Price Matching Program Next Week

Rogers launched ‘Price Match’ back in April of 2013, a new smartphone price matching program aimed at matching competitors’ prices advertised nationwide on TV, radio, print or the Internet.

The program will be ending next week on January 16, according to an internal memo (via MobileSyrup), less than two years after it launched. The internal document notes Rogers will compensate its customers by offering a better ‘Rogers experience’ though their recent expansion of “Rogers NHL GameCentre LIVE, Roam Like Home, Rogers First Rewards, and other great perks!”

Rogers also noted it would “continue to offer competitive pricing for all devices,” just one advantage customers have with the company, on top of being able to share data via Share Everything plans and the freedom to change their monthly plans—for free at any time.

Did anyone actually use this price matching program? Most of the time, there wasn’t really a need to price match since prices were relatively the same across the Big 3.

If you can afford it, it is actually pretty decent. I don’t have Rogers but using Fido. My wife’s Wind phone can never compare to my speed and coverage reception by a hundred miles. I always need to open up my iPhone’s personal hot spot for her or she will have to use Shaw Go Wifi.

By all mean I am not here to defend that they are cheap but I have an iPhone 6 Plus so I rather pay more to get better experience.

I’ve learned the grass isn’t always greener on the other side…. I’ve complained about every telecom operator available in Southwestern Ontario. The one thing they have in common is that their customer service always sucks.

The price match was on the cost of the device, not the monthly plan, so it isn’t just the big 3, but also the big box retailers prices that they were matching.

On Black Friday Best Buy was selling the iPhone 6 for $150 off on a contract, and they were selling it for $300 off on Boxing Day. Given some of the aggressive sale prices that Best Buy has had on the iPhone over the last two years I can understand why Rogers would cancel their price matching program. If they discount the phone an extra $300 on top of the subsidy they are already paying there is a good chance they aren’t going to make money off of that customer before the contract ends and the customer is upgrading again.

According to the original article they price match Best Buy and Future Shop. The Rogers site says they will match any nationally advertised price for the same device on the same term, which means they should match the big box retailers. From searching online, it sounds like some people have had trouble getting them to price match Best Buy while others have done so successfully. According to the wording of their policy they should be matching Best Buy’s price if Best Buy is offering a sale price nation wide.

It all depends on who you talk to. Some people are more flexible than others when matching or providing better than advertised monthly plans.

I work for Rogers retail and can confirm that we DID NOT price match with 3rd party stores such as Bestbuy, wal-mart, costco etc. Only actual provider (as advertised by Bell or Telus directly, for example)

On Boxing Day (a few days before actually) the iPhone 6 was sold at BB for $99 for new or renewals on Bell. Rogers will do whatever it takes to keep their gross profit margin at the same level if not higher. If possible, try to get off the big 3 or at least go month to month.
