Rumour Claims ‘iPad mini 4’ to Gain A8 CPU, 802.11ac Wi-Fi

Japanese site Macotakara is claiming it has heard details on what Apple’s next iPad mini 4 could entail. According to its unnamed source, the next generation iPad mini would sport the A8 CPU found in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, while adding faster 802.11ac Wi-Fi (versus the current 802.11a/b/g/n found in all iPad models).

Apple only released the iPad mini 3 last October, which did not come with a CPU upgrade, but rather only the addition of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. The move confused some customers because when the iPad mini 2 debuted, it arrived with the newest A7 processor at the time, shared with the iPhone 5s.

The iPad mini 3 CPU upgrade path suggests Apple may follow its previous history of using older generation CPUs in the smaller tablet, such as when the original iPad mini debuted with the A5 processor in 2012, despite the newer A6 chip debuting in the iPhone 5 in the same year.

Of course, this is just a rumour so your guess is as good as mine on what Apple will do next with the iPad mini (iPhone 6 Plus users probably haven’t used theirs in a while).
