Apple Watch Sport Screen Isn’t As Durable As I Thought [VIDEO]

As the Apple Watch starts going on sale in Apple retail stores, those looking to pick one up may still be on the fence about whether to buy the Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Sport, or maybe even the Apple Watch Edition. I thought this would be a perfect time to share with you a little incident that happened with my Apple Watch Sport, that may help you finalize your decision.

YouTube video

So yes, I have a nasty scratch across the screen of my Apple Watch Sport. As I mentioned in the video, I think it might have happened when I bumped our granite countertop. I can’t be sure, but it’s really the only thing I’ve ever bumped or that the watch screen has come into contact with that would be hard enough to scratch the screen.

I was sure the Ion-X glass used on the Apple Watch Sport would be fine with my every day lifestyle when I bought it. Sadly it hasn’t held up. Now, does this mean it would have scratched if I had the Apple Watch with the sapphire screen? Maybe. Does it mean if you have the Apple Watch Sport the screen will scratch if you bump it? No. Does it mean I need to be a lot more careful with my Apple Watch? You better believe it.

As for what I’m going to do next, I can get it repaired. I do have Apple Care – something I highly recommend – but to be honest, I’m a little scared I’d just scratch it again. So I’m not sure what I’m going to do just yet. The scratch doesn’t affect the usage of the watch. I can however feel it when I move my finger across the screen, but the scratch is more an eyesore than anything.

What do you think I should do? Get it fixed now or wait? Let me know.

Kris, maybe the watch kissed the diamond on an engagement ring? Your ion-x screen tests as a hardness of 8/10 on the mohs scale. Granite is only a 7/10, it shouldn’t be able to scratch an ion-x screen. The more expensive sapphire screen is 9/10. Diamond is 10/10.

I know it wasn’t my wife’s ring because of the time frame of when it happened. I know the hardness numbers don’t add up, but again, depending where I hit it, the angle and speed, it could have scratched it. I mean it’s the only thing I know I bumped during the time frame of when it happened.

Interesting, between yourself and AP, it seems that Ion-X glass does not live up to its tested mohs hardness of 8/10. More like 7/10; comparable to sand. Everyday materials seem capable of scratching the surface. I wonder what the variance in hardness is, for this glass, between production runs? The original samples that Apple sent around for review may have been from the hardest samples produced. Your production piece does not live up to the published hardness value.

Yeah, I know there will always be some variance, but agreed, everyday objects shouldn’t be scratching the glass.

Same just happened to me with my pebble -_-
(granted the pebble doesnt have a great screen material, just funny I noticed a scratch on my watch around the same time )

It’s no fun whatever device it happens to.

The least I can do is warn others to be a little extra careful with their watches.

I’ve looked at those, but aren’t they too bulky? I love the look of the watch, but I am scared of getting the screen fixed and then scratching it again.

I found the Spigen Apple Watch Case Tough Armor added just a little bulk to the Apple Watch (didn’t make it any heavier than a metal chronograph watch). Still looks great, easy access to interact with the watch and so well protected.

Thanks. I may have to look into it a little more.

I had 4 deep vertical gouges on the top edge of the ionX glass before the first week with my watch was up. Like you I couldn’t determine what I did, just normal chores including weekend mowing and trimming of the lawn. I do notice that when I hold my phone in my left hand resting on a table/surface, the top edge directly sits on that surface, and when getting up quickly my left hand tends to push down which rubs that top edge. Bought a Spigen thin-fit which is already worn on the top edge.

Thanks for the picture. I sucks about the scratches, especially when you think the screen should withstand normal every day use.

It took me forever to pick the apple watch instead of the sport model. The decision was mostly due to a better look on my arm for something I would wear every day. Thought I wouldn’t hit the screen but have given it a few good accidental hits (like the car door etc) and dropped it twice. No issues yet. Lots of little scratches on the stainless but I can’t see them at all without straining my eyes. Might polish it at some point but not really worried. Wouldn’t change my decision

I’ve never been a watch person before, so I went with the Sport because I just wasn’t sure how much I’d wear and use it. But after several weeks now, there is no doubt the next version I’ll be getting stainless steel.
