Users in Canada Can Now Sign Up for Messenger Without a Facebook Account

Facebook has announced users in Canada, the US, Peru and Venezuela will now be able to sign up for Messenger without a Facebook account, to allow more users to jump onto the social network’s messaging platform.

The requirement to sign up now is just a mobile number and it’ll give you the option to sync your contacts from your phone.

Here’s how it’ll work:

  • On the Messenger welcome screen, you will now see an option that says “Not on Facebook?”
  • From there, you can sign up with your name, phone number and a photo.

The company says it’s making the change so “more people can enjoy all the features that are available on Messenger – including photos, videos, group chats, voice and video calling, stickers and more. All you need is a phone number.”

The new sign up method is rolling out today in these four countries, so if you’ve always wanted to be included in a group Messenger chat but didn’t want a Facebook account, this is your way in.
