Apple Watch Competitor, the Casio Smartwatch Launches Next March

Forty years after introducing its first digital wristwatch, Casio has decided to ride the latest trend of smartwatches in a way only an established watchmaker can: it will launch a watch that tries to be smart, instead of a smart device that acts like a watch, reports the Wall Street Journal. The watch will be available next March in the US and Japan.

After spending the past four years leading a team that worked on Casio smartwatch prototypes, new president Kazuhiro Kashio has decided that it is time for the company to reserve its share in a market that is yet to grow. As he puts it, “I don’t think the smartwatch will be an instant success, but we want it to grow in the long term.”

“We are trying to bring our smartwatch to a level of watch perfection: a device that won’t break easily, is simple to put on and feels good to wear,” Kashio says.

Casio’s smartwatch will have a competitive price — about $400, according to Kashio — but this is subject to change. Also, it will target men for outdoor sports and leisure use, in terms of both function and appearance.
