iOS 9 Gets Smarter Maps with Automatic Directions Feature
As pointed out by Reddit user MrMacNeil, iOS 9 beta can predict what you want even before you unlock your iPhone based on user habits. He noticed that after getting into their car after work, directions home appeared on their iPhone’s lock screen. According to AppleInsider, the feature also extends into the Maps app in iOS 9, which can predict directions automatically when a user is getting ready to drive.
A major focus for Apple in building iOS 9 is making it even easier to access the information you need, in part by predicting what you want before you unlock your phone. One way the upcoming operating system update will do that is by knowing when you get into your car, and predicting where you’re probably planning to drive. With iOS 9, the iPhone knows when a user gets in their car because of a connection to the vehicle’s infotainment system, either via Bluetooth or USB.
The source notes that many other users have also commented on the Reddit thread to confirm that the functionality works on their Apple Watch as well. So while iOS already offers estimated travel times in the Notification Center’s Today view, with the release of iOS 9 this fall, travel directions will become even more convenient, with popular destinations automatically showing up on the iPhone’s lock screen.

Does it do this on its own? Or do we have to keep asking it for directions home for a week and then itll start to automatically do it?
It does it on its own
The enhancement I like is while I was driving Siri said that there was an unexpected delay ahead and wanted to know if I wanted to reroute to save five minutes (a guided route was already engaged). I hit yes and when I passed by that spot on another road I could see the 401 was jammed and it probably was longer than a five minute wait!
That happened to me too – last Thursday. It was pretty cool.
Did this happen while you were using turn-by-turn GPS, or it just came up without you even using maps? If it came up without you using maps, that sounds awesome. What a great idea.
As I said a route was engaged. That would be cool if it did it on its own but I would imagine it would be a drain on battery life to constantly search for quick routes.
Okay. It wasn’t clear to me that a route was engaged, but now that I re-read your post I realized that “re-route” would refer to changing a route that’s already engaged.
In my opinion it’s about time their Maps app did this. I was under the impression from the launch of Maps that this is how it was supposed to behave, but I never saw it in action.
What they could do to avoid battery drain is somehow log your normal route (which it seems to do in the background), and then if a traffic issue comes up that they know is on your normal route at the time you typically drive it, it would then check to see if you are indeed driving that route and then notify you if you are. So it wouldn’t activate the GPS unless an incident occurred on your normal route.
It would be nice and handy! But for now I’m very happy with this new feature!
google maps already has that feature.
If only google maps could be accurate.
apple maps traffic is very hit and miss. sometimes it shows info before anyone else, but most of the time it doesn’t. automatic directions will suck your battery big time cuz location services will be in use very frequently.
