Facebook Responds to iOS App Battery Drain Issue

Facebook app

Yesterday, we reported how Facebook’s iOS app uses an extraordinary amount of resources when it’s in the background, leading to excessive battery drain. Today, Facebook has responded through a spokesperson, confirming that it is investigating the issue and is working to put out a fix “soon”, TechCrunch reports.

“We have heard reports of some people experiencing battery issues with our iOS app. We’re looking into this and hope to have a fix in place soon,” the spokesperson said.

The company however hasn’t commented on any of the various theories about what’s going on here, whether it’s audio hijacking, as explained by MacStories’ Federico Viticci, or using VoIP to keep the app awake against users’ wishes. Nonetheless, the company is fixing something, probably a bug or a feature responsible for the various reports of extraneous background app activity.

Meanwhile, if you’re experiencing serious battery drain issues due to Facebook, it is recommended not to install the app, and instead access Facebook from Safari, till the company releases a permanent fix.

I have the entire background refresh option disabled as I don’t feel I really need anything running in the background. I haven’t really noticed any drain what so ever. Perhaps I’m just one of the lucky ones though.
