Apple Allegedly Building its Own GPU

Apple’s iDevices are powered by the company’s proprietary A-series of processors, which are based on the ARM architecture. However, when it comes to GPUs, Apple, like everyone else, turns to well-established manufacturers – in this case Imagination Technologies. But according to a recent rumour, that is about to change.
Fudzilla (via GforGames) has heard little birdies singing about Apple being busy for the past few years building its own GPU. In the light of its own A-series chips, developing a GPU in-house makes sense – it would be the next step for a competitive device in the smartphone and tablet market.
Rome hasn’t been built in a day and it sure takes at least a few years to create a fully functional mobile GPU. This is why Apple has been working under extreme secrecy for a few years, according to Fudzilla’s Deep Throats in the graphics industry.
Fact is, Apple does have the cash needed to build its own GPU, so from this perspective the information isn’t much of a stretch. The real question is whether this will actually materialize. We all know that Apple’s research and development labs are busy building and testing products that will be incorporated in future devices. If yes, when?
Until then, the partnership with a third-party is here to stay.
