Periscope Celebrates 1st Birthday: Over 200 Million Broadcasts Created

Exactly one year ago, Twitter jumped into the live-streaming game with its debut of Periscope, turning everybody into a ‘broadcaster’.

Since then, the company informs us over 200 million broadcasts have been created by its users, with the equivalent of 110 years of live video consumed daily on iOS and Android.

The company said in a statement they wanted to thank everyone “for making Periscope a vibrant global community,” adding “it means everything to us.”

Four months after its launch last year, Periscope announced it had surpassed 10 million users. Earlier this year, Twitter added direct Periscope integration into its iOS app, while also allowing GoPro users to live stream directly to their iPhones.

Despite launching after rival live-streaming platform Meerkat, the latter has since decided to transition to a social network instead, admitting Periscope and Facebook Live Video drew away their early user base, stalling growth.
