Uber is set to start its engines and re-launch tonight at midnight on July 1st in Edmonton. The move comes after the province approved insurance coverage for ridesharing companies earlier this week.
Ramit Kar, Uber’s General Manager for Alberta, said “Uber is pleased to be back in Alberta’s capital offering a safe, reliable and affordable transportation alternative to Edmontonians.”
Kar went on to say “We want to applaud Mayor Iveson and city council for their leadership in embracing innovation and more transportation options,” while also commending the provincial government for approving a ridesharing insurance product.
However, Kar noted the added licensing requirements “create unnecessary barriers for the vast majority of Albertans looking to use technology to share their rides and earn income.”
Specifically, in his statement Kar notes “adopted licensing regime will mean less flexible earning opportunities, less urban mobility.”
There you have it Edmonton–Uber is back in town.
