Prince William Plans to Meet Tim Cook to Talk Cyberbullying Prevention

Prince William, the initiator of a taskforce on the prevention of cyber-bullying, plans to visit the US to meet with Apple CEO Tim Cook in order to ask him to join the taskforce. While the meetings are yet to be arranged, his agenda will likely also include a meeting with Mark Zuckerberg.

The taskforce was created earlier this year and includes the British and European heads of Google, Snapchat, Twitter and Facebook, as well as anti-bullying charities and Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the World Wide Web. These people were asked to “devise methods” that will make it easier for both children and parents to get help if they experience cyber-bullying.

According to a source speaking with the British newspaper the Times, the taskforce will complete its work in May, and Prince William will take their recommendations to America.

A royal aide added: “The taskforce has received lots of interest from the US and the global leadership of these major companies who have expressed interest in being involved in the process . . . The next big push will be in the summer.”

Tessy Ojo, chief executive of the Diana Award charity and a taskforce member, said: “We are looking at ambitious preventative measures that can be put in place when it comes to cyber-bullying and how the industry can support young people better.”

According to the Times, Prince William has been in part motivated to create this taskforce after becoming father to Prince George and Princess Charlotte. William and the Duchess of Cambridge were also moved by the story of Felix Alexander, a 17-year-old teenager from Worcester, who took his own life after years of online abuse.
