U.S. Product Safety Officials Recall 2.8M Samsung Washing Machines

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, U.S. product safety officials have recalled 2.8 million top-loading Samsung washing machines following reports of injuries. What marks another blow to the South Korean company’s reputation already reeling from the botched recall of its Galaxy Note 7, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has already reported nine injuries, including a broken jaw and an injured shoulder.

The agency, which has received more than 700 reports of incidents, said that the top of these Samsung washing machines can unexpectedly detach from the chassis during use, posing a risk of injury from impact. The company said it was working with retailers and the agency to inform consumers about the problematic washing machines “through direct outreach, including customer service, social media, marketing, and in-store communication.”

“Our priority is to reduce any safety risks in the home and to provide our customers with easy and simple choices in response to the recall,” said John Herrington, senior vice president and general manager of Home Appliances, Samsung Electronics America. “We are moving quickly and in partnership with the CPSC to ensure consumers know the options available to them and that any disruption in the home is minimized.”

The recall affects 34 top-loading models sold at various stores starting in 2011. According to Samsung, the issue does not affect any washing machine model sold outside North America.

Damn, I was notified by Samsung two weeks ago about a Sears Kenmore washing machine being part of this problem (since they are made by Samsung) and after checking my serial number I did have one of those potentially exploding washing machine.

Now that they will recall them, I wonder if the replacement will have the same look because I buyed it with the dryer and I don’t want to have two different looking machine in the bathroom…well I guess I’ll have to wait for more informations from Samsung.
