Amazon Unveils Shopping App for Apple TV, Requires Prime Membership to Make Purchases

Amazon launched their shopping app today, which allows users to purchase browse for and purchase items from the company’s retail catalog, on the Apple TV.

Anyone can use the new app to search for products, however, in order to purchase an item, you will need an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $99 per year and includes benefits like two-day shipping.

Users can sign in with their existing Amazon account to browse and search for products. In addition, you will be able to use dictation to search for products using your voice. Browse through immersive product images and videos. Buy on TV using your remote, or add to list to review later on your phone or computer.

Yeah, this article is written as if for a US audience. The app is only available in the US, and Prime in Canada is $79; it’s $99 in the US but the article doesn’t note that.

As usual Canadians get the short end of the stick due to stupid licencing rules and lose out on another amazing feature.

I do have access to the American Amazon Prime for video (launched in Canada with limited catalog this morning, BTW). I wonder if they will finally allow users to watch videos instead of having to AirPlay.
